Writing in Public

This is my first post here on Mirror, where I plan on writing all of my future posts, and it’s something I’m really excited about. I’m using Mirror because it’s a decentralized protocol and there are lots of cool tools they’ve added that I hope to play around with in the future.

I’ll be writing about whatever comes to mind and what I find interesting. This will mostly be about crypto/web3 and things that somehow relate, whether that’s directly or indirectly. I won’t be making any promises on a roadmap here, so don’t expect much quality or quantity from me. Seriously, I’ve never liked or been good at writing. This is my attempt to change both of those things. All of my worst grades in school were in writing and English classes.

Crypto Journey

It probably helps to know a bit about me. I’m currently a college student, and I think I’ve finally found something I’m truly interested in doing for the rest of my life. Here’s a quick summary of how I got into crypto:

  • Bitcoin in late summer/early fall of 2020, credit to Pomp and his video on Bitcoin

  • Ethereum in the spring of 2021, credit to Garry Tan and his video on $ETH

  • Down the rabbit hole in the fall of 2021 and haven’t looked back since, credit to Blake Robbins, Reed, and their Creator Economics podcast, specifically their episode with Fred Ehrsam. Also great episodes with Li Jin, Deeze, and Devin Finzer

  • These are the resources that I remember and stick out to me as what got me interested and prompted me to go deeper down the rabbit hole to continue learning. And here are some other resources I enjoyed that helped me understand the basics, many of which were suggestions from the people mentioned above.

Why am I writing this?

I’m writing to learn in public. I’ve learned this is probably a good idea from Blake Robbins and many others in the tech, VC, and crypto twitter worlds. It’s a recurring piece of advice I found on various Twitter threads on how to break into this space.

I also recently read 100 Ways To Live Better and I saw similar advice in #8 and #108, which was: to express yourself publicly for 100 days in a row and to write things online (even if you’re not qualified, and I’m definitely not qualified). This is my start to both of those, and I already started the 100 Tweets in a row every day. I also always hear advice about journaling and daily writing, so I guess the Twitter thing and writing posts on Mirror is one version of that, but I’m still figuring all this out.

I also think and have heard that writing helps crystalize your thinking and you learn what you don’t know. So many times I have an idea in my head only to realize I can’t actually articulate it that well, and probably don’t know it as well as I thought I did. I remember hearing about Patrick Collison and Stripe having an emphasis on writing out their ideas, in place of using slide decks. The point is that writing is good and helps your thinking, so I want to get better at it. Doing it in public can only help because of potential feedback, discourse, and the general idea of open-source, which is very prominent in the world of web3. I’m probably not the best communicator, but knowing how important of a skill it is in every aspect of life, this is one way to work on that.

Lastly, I’m still exploring crypto/web3 and looking to break into the space. As you could probably tell from how I got into crypto, I spend a lot of time on YouTube and I’m particularly interested in the creator economy. I’m also interested in our digital identities, games, and more (and I think NFTs and DAOs tie into all this stuff). I’m always looking to meet new people and learn about projects or ideas in general, so feel free to reach out.

See you out in the metaverse (whatever the hell that even is- I think it’s just the internet, we’re already in a version of it, and it’ll continue to change).
