In addition to the academic profession, the law profession is self governing, central banks in the West are self governing. At least in principle. I want to introduce the concept of a self governing nation state. That is a political regime that eliminates the electorate as a check and balance on the state. In other words, the relation between the state and its citizens or between the ruler and the ruled does not contain the element of voting rights in the direction of citizen to state or ruled to ruler. It may sound extremely dark to those infatuated with democratic institutions. Because the fear of the self interested state is going to destroy their citizens and the local region.
I do recognize that the trade off is the free market of ideas facilitated quite successfully by democratic institutions under the legal rule of freedom of expression or the First Amendment in the U.S. Although I sort of have this sense about the erosion of academic freedom caused by the expansion of administration and office managers in universities that are censoring by way of substituting for tenure stream academic personnel.
However, I do want to remind everyone of Plato's philosopher king. I also do want to highlight that the self governing professionals operate quite well or at least at equal quality as democratic institutions. So, in economists' terms, self governing nation state is Pareto efficient. Also, Steve Jobs built Apple relying on self governing a leadership team that shares a vision for the future.
The implication is that, what those living under successful democratic institutions consider as 'authoritarian regimes' is merely when self governing nation state is not successful. When self governing nation state is successful, it is at least equally as good as successful democratic institutions. Although I would further develop the concept of success if I were writing in an academic context. When it comes to political institutions, success is achieving the goal of regulation on the distribution of power, because power necessarily corrupts when it is concentrated. Success is also a broad and vague term that is used without precise understanding in some less reputable academic fields.
When Karl Marx wrote his books, Marx observed the oppressed versus privileged human groups along the lines of socioeconomic class. However, it is at most highly contentious whether the oppressed versus privileged human groups is applicable to the lines of race, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, religion. In other words, the oppressed versus privileged human groups along the lines of race, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation, religion are exaggerations and interpretations of Karl Marx's socioeconomic theory by those who are not Karl Marx. I polemicize that there is a symmetry between Marx's socioeconomic theory and democratic institutions. In that, the range of demographics or geographical regions that would result in democratic institutions to succeed had been exaggerated.
When it comes to the topic of consent, between the ruled and ruler, I do have a solution, and it is deep. But the matter of whether anyone is made worse off in successful self governing nation state is to be justified relying on the incommensurable nature of values.
The bottom line is, recognize (1) and accept (2)
there is a group of people that are better off in self governing nation state
harmonious attitudes toward self governing nation state
