I experienced an existential creator crisis.
After 8 years of regularly posting content on social media, I felt a deep disconnection - based on a profound realization - which led to an extended hiatus.
This is not to say I have stopped creating. I love the creative process and being in the moment with a medium such as video, photography or writing.
However I realized that by design, most posting on social media leads to superficial validation of art, creativity and self expression. When I went back to the root of why I love creating, this validation premise did not align.
The catalyst in this realization is what is known as web3. Learning about this new frontier of the internet has captivated me as a creator and builder.
What is web3 and how does it affect the work of creators?
Web3 is what you could call the latest “version” of the internet. The first version or Web1 was known as the wild-west dot com era, from 1990-2005. Web2 was the “walled garden” platform era of 2005-2020 dominated by centralized companies such as Facebook, Google and Twitter.
This latest version of the internet is designed to give back or “decentralize” control back to users. It does this by using a technology called the Blockchain. Many people when they hear this think of cryptocurrencies. In fact, Blockchain is the underlying technology that powers crypto, but it has so much more utility and potential than just assets.
One exciting aspect about web3 for me as a creator is the possibility of posting for the sake of authenticity, rather than superficiality.
If you’ve seen the Netflix documentary “The Social Dilemma” you learned that current systems designed by web2 platforms are algorithmically biased towards rewarding creators that capture attention.
Capturing attention means constantly being in a race “the bottom of the brainstem” and appealing to our surface level, animalistic tendencies. An example of this on social media this may look like someone posting short term trends, making sexy dance moves or hurtling controversial comments to gain likes and followers.
What web3 and Blockchain technology has the potential to do is re-orient our experience towards expressing ourselves authentically. For this to happen, the technology needs to reward good stewardship of the internet.
Good stewards of the internet = good stewards of the Earth.
I am building something new in the web3 technology space and excited to share it with you soon. I am also posting more on Twitter and soon on Mirror - an NFT platform for writers.
More to come on the intersection of consciousness, web3 and creators.
