Gigling Racing: How it Work

Gigling Racing is an exciting new Gigaverse game where you race your Gigling (a lovable two-legged horse) against other players, onchain, for stakes.

You don’t need a Gigaverse account to jump in.

This is the first Gigaverse game mode that works both within our existing world, and as a standalone game.

🦄 What makes a Gigling

Every Gigling has its own racing identity, made up of a handful of underlying qualities.

Every Gigling has four race-phase stats that decide how it performs at different parts of a race:

  • Start. Explosiveness out of the gate.

  • Speed. Cruising pace through the middle of the race.

  • Stamina. Endurance - what keeps a Gigling from fading in long races.

  • Finish. Closing kick in the home stretch.

Plus a handful of non-numeric attributes:

  • Gender. Male or female, a female is required for breeding (More on breeding below.)

  • Rarity. One of six tiers, from Uncommon up to Giga. Drives how many traits a Gigling has and the floor of its stat rolls. (More on rarity below.)

  • Faction. One of eight. Determines which stretches of the track give the Gigling a home-turf boost.

  • Track-condition preference. Cold, average, or hot. Specialists are swingier when the race matches or opposes their preference.

Traits. Special abilities that fire under specific conditions: a vicious start, a hard closing kick, a knack for shrugging off bad weather. Each trait has a ★ , ★ ★ , or ★ ★ ★ star tier that scales how strong it is.

Every Gigling keeps secrets

Some things about a Gigling are out in the open: its gender, its faction (or whether it runs factionless), and its rarity. Everything else is yours to uncover by watching them race. The same Gigling can look unstoppable in one race and ordinary in the next. Race them, take notes and study their performance over time; discovering what your Gigling is good at is part of the game. Their stats & traits will be revealed gradually as you race them, and fully revealed after they are bred, and their offspring replaces them. (More on breeding below.)

Rarity

Every Gigling is one of six rarities: Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Relic, or Giga. Rarity matters in two ways.

First, the higher the rarity, the higher the floor of their roll. At the start of every race, each Gigling’s four core stats are rolled fresh, based on their base stats.

A Giga is unlikely to be a dud across the board, while an Uncommon can land anywhere from middling to genuinely surprising.

Second, rarer Giglings come with more traits: abilities like a strong start out of the gate, a hard closing kick, or a knack for shrugging off bad conditions. An Uncommon Gigling has a single trait, while a Giga tier Gigling stacks several. Traits are hidden and must be discovered through racing the Gigling. Traits layer on top of everything else and may make the difference between two Giglings that look identical on paper.

All this said, rarity tilts the odds, it doesn’t decide the race. A high-rarity Gigling on a flat day, on the wrong track, against the wrong field, can absolutely lose to an Uncommon that catches the right track conditions, belongs to the right faction, and is racing the right distance. The right Gigling for the right race beats the rarer Gigling in the wrong one. The favorite may win more often, but not always.

One more thing worth knowing: trait tier is independent of rarity. An Uncommon Gigling’s single trait has the same odds of being a ★ ★ ★ star as any of a Giga’s traits do.

🛤 Race distance

Every race has a set distance (# of meters) chosen by the creator of the race. Make sure you select the right Gigling for the race distance, as each Gigling will have its own preferences, based on its stats and traits.

🏇 How a race runs

Every race has an entry fee in ETH, set by the race creator.

You pay in, your Gigling takes one of the open spots, and the field lines up. Each race has a default of 8 Gigling slots. During the race, there’s room for mischief; players can use items to boost themselves or sabotage others.

Each race has its own conditions, which matter (more on that below).

The way the ETH payout is split among winners or participants is configurable by the host of the race. For example, the host of a race could decide that ETH will only be paid out to the top three finishers, with the largest cut going to first (60%), then second (30%), then third (10%).

After the race, your Gigling is fatigued and sits out on a cooldown before they can run again, so top performers can’t be cycled back-to-back forever.

Races can be watched in real time, and can also be spectated in real time, even by people who aren't participating in the race.

🦋 Use of items

The use of items is configurable per race. The host picks which items, if any, are in play. For example, dung could be used to sabotage (slow down) rivals and butterflies could be used to boost (speed up) your own Gigling.

Onchain, by design

Every race plays out onchain, and many actions generate transactions. Every race is resolved by our custom Race Oracle and results are submitted onchain.

The XP attributed to individual players will be mostly influenced by the number of races they participate in, each week.

🏁 Race day

At the start of every race, each Gigling’s four core stats are rolled fresh, based on their base stats. The faction boost and track-condition draw are also rolled per race. So even the best Giglings can lose sometimes, and underdogs can pull upsets.

Factions and the track

There are eight factions, and every Gigling either belongs to one, or runs factionless. The track is split into stretches blessed by different factions; when a Gigling runs through a stretch matching its own faction, it gets a little boost.

Some factions may show up more often than others in a particular race. Overall, Gigus faction will appear most often (praise be to Gigus). The mix of faction stretches is unveiled at the start of the race.

More track-level dynamics may come into play down the line.

❄️ Track conditions

Each race rolls one of three track conditions: cold, average, or hot. Each Gigling has a condition they prefer. Match their preference and they’ll pick up a small speed bonus.

👴 Race career

Every Gigling has a finite number of races in them. Once they’re spent, they retire and can’t race again. Every race teaches you a little more about their hidden qualities, and by the back half of their career you’ll have learned where they shine and can start picking races to match their strengths.

When a Gigling retires (or, before this time comes), the path forward is to breed them.

The offspring inherits qualities from both parents and steps into the retired parent’s place in your stable.

💖 Breeding

Breeding takes one male Gigling and one female. Mechanically, breeding is being designed to keep the overall population of Giglings flat (steady lads.. there will be no inflation here). Females are rare compared to males, and present an opportunity to their owners depending how they choose to use them. Breeding will go live soon after Gigling Racing does. More details will be shared closer to its release.

💰 Fees

Race creators will be able to set a house fee for themselves within a minimum and maximum range. All other entry fees are (1) distributed to winners of the race, with (2) a small portion going towards an ongoing jackpot and (3) a small protocol fee.

👉 Putting it all together

Picking a Gigling is balancing who they are (their race style, their track-condition preference, their faction, their rarity and traits) against what the day brings (race distance, track conditions, track layout, luck of the rolls, other competitors). A solid Gigling can lose to a flashier specialist when the conditions line up against them, and a humble Uncommon can steal a race when things tilt its way; or have a high breeding value with rare traits.

What’s next

We are putting the finishing touches on Gigling Racing right now and are excited to launch it soon. The game will go live in public beta for the first week or so, without breeding, and breeding is then expected to go live within a week or two of launch.
