Enabling DeSci: Gitcoin's Role in Transforming Scientific Funding
Written by Lina Pauline Schrott and Manuel Olariu At the core of the DeSci movement lies the goal of creating an open scientific ecosystem where many more people are able to participate in and fund science without needing a PHD or being at the epicenter of scientific hubs. This component of being permissionless and open has huge potential to accelerate innovation. At Gitcoin we aim to serve as a catalyst of that movement. The total of the matching pools of the 3 DeSci rounds that have run on ...
Gitcoin creates solutions that empower communities to fund, build, and protect what matters.

The Regenerative Finance (ReFi) movement has come a long way since its nascent days, growing from foundational ideas laid in 2017 through a surge in popularity and investment in 2021. ReFi addresses a fundamental issue: the traditional financial system often prioritizes short-term gains for capital holders at the expense of nature and biodiversity. By shifting towards sustainable and inclusive models, ReFi focuses on the holistic wellbeing of people and the planet and stands as a symbol of hope and transformation. Emerging from the Regenerative Economics and DeFi movements, ReFi leverages Web3, DLT, AI, and dMRV technologies to achieve its goals.
Since inception in late 2021, ReFi DAO has been at the forefront of catalyzing the Regenerative Finance (ReFi) movement, with a global mission to be a pivotal catalyst in the widespread growth, implementation, and adoption of ReFi. Through initiatives like ReFi Local Nodes founders circles, a global media & events network and much more, ReFi DAO has been a central figure in helping to incubate and support a huge array of ReFi projects and communities worldwide. The movement advocates for financial mechanisms that not only minimize harm but actively enhance ecosystem and societal health, demonstrating the potential of mission-driven communities and distributed technologies to address major global challenges.
ReFi DAO's journey with Gitcoin began in the early days, with the DAO being one of the top funded projects in the early Gitcoin Grants Climate Rounds.
A significant milestone in this journey was the launch of ReFi Local Nodes in April 2023. These nodes act as community-driven hubs, where local groups can learn, experiment, and implement ReFi tools tailored to their specific needs. This initiative aims to create a global network of nodes, each contributing to a worldwide regenerative ecosystem.

In May 2023, during the Gitcoin Beta Round, ReFi DAO took a bold step by sponsoring a $25k DAI match pool from their treasury. This round focused on supporting ReFi Local Nodes in the Global South, incubating 14 new nodes through an 8-week program led by Daryl Edwards and Anna Kaic. The program laid the foundational pillars for these nodes, emphasizing community building and setting the stage for sustainable development.
Gitcoin Grants Round 18 (GG18) marked another significant achievement for ReFi DAO. With $30k in matching funds from the Celo Foundation, Celo Europe, and CeLatam, this round saw the emergence of 18 new Local Nodes worldwide. The round attracted over 1,550 contributions, totaling more than $6,700 in additional donations.
After this round, many of the new Local Nodes set up initiatives in their local communities. ReFi Medellín launched a community lending platform that pools local resources to support small-scale projects, while ReFi Costa Rica introduced a Spanish-language podcast and incubator program.
One of the most inspiring aspects of ReFi DAO's journey has been the emergence of local leaders who have transformed their nodes into thriving, self-sustaining entities.
ReFi DAO has recently wrappped up the Beta cohort incubator program and is gearing up for GG21 with a reimagined organizational structure. This 2.0 version will introduce various sub-projects and circles, each contributing to the broader goal of advancing regenerative finance.
A key focus for ReFi DAO moving forward is impact measurement, with ongoing developments aimed at enhancing transparency and accountability. The proposed development of ReFi Passport—a tool for tracking both on-chain and off-chain impacts—will play a crucial role in this effort.
By deepening their alliances with entities such as Celo, Regens Unite, GreenPill Network, Bankless DAO, Crypto Commons Association, Silvi Protocol, Treegens, and The Lexicon, ReFi DAO aims to create a network of interconnected initiatives driving meaningful change. This vision of a Regen CoordiNATION underscores their commitment to collaboration and synergy.
Reflecting on ReFi DAO's journey with Gitcoin, Monty shared, "It's been an incredible journey seeing the evolution of the Gitcoin platform. The continual improvements have made it easier and more effective to run rounds, and we're excited about the future and the potential for even greater impact."
Take part in celebrating ReFi DAO’s success on Gitcoin, and directly contribute to the funding of digital public goods through Gitcoin Grants. All proceeds from this NFT will go towards Gitcoin Grants’ matching pool.
