What does it take to build a cultural icon in the age of emerging technology?
For artist and former MLB player Micah Johnson, it started with a simple but powerful question overheard from a young boy: “Can astronauts be Black?”
That moment sparked the creation of Aku, a young Black boy with an oversized astronaut helmet and an unshakable belief that anything is possible. Since his debut, Aku has become more than just a character.
He’s a symbol. A movement. A bridge between art, technology, identity, and aspiration.
I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing Micah a few times over the years, but our most recent conversation felt different—more reflective, more grounded, and full of insight for anyone navigating the future of storytelling and IP.
Micah’s journey is one of radical reinvention.
Drafted by the Chicago White Sox in 2012, Micah had a promising career in Major League Baseball. But multiple injuries—including a fractured wrist and a torn shoulder—forced him into early retirement. What could have been the end of one chapter became the beginning of another.
He picked up a paintbrush.
What started with a “paint and sip” class in 2016 evolved into a full-time creative pursuit. But it wasn’t until Micah discovered NFTs in 2019 that things truly clicked. The blend of digital ownership, community, and creativity gave him the platform he didn’t know he needed.
In just a few years, Aku has:
Raised over $20 million in primary and secondary NFT sales
Landed on the cover of TIME Magazine
Been optioned for film and television—a first for any NFT character
Traveled to outer space (literally—the “Why Not Me” NFT was beamed to the International Space Station)
Anchored immersive IRL exhibits, including a wildly successful three-day activation during Art Basel
Micah’s success wasn’t a fluke—it was the result of deep intention and bold experimentation.
In our latest conversation, he shared how the vision for Aku shifted from being a solo art project to a creator-led ecosystem that invites community participation, collaboration, and creative ownership.
“It’s not about scaling projects anymore,” he told me. “It’s about scaling trust. About building relationships that last beyond a drop.”
This ethos has carried into how he structures his team, chooses his partners, and interacts with his collectors. Micah prioritizes authenticity over hype, a philosophy that shows up in everything from the narratives he writes to the music layered into his NFTs.
He’s not just selling art—he’s world-building.
And he’s doing it in a way that feels inclusive, accessible, and timeless.
Micah’s story holds essential lessons for brands, creators, and institutions navigating today’s rapidly shifting media landscape:
Start with purpose – A single moment of empathy led to a global movement. Stories that resonate are rooted in real human experiences.
Build community, not just an audience – Web3 allows for direct-to-collector relationships, tokenized loyalty, and participatory storytelling. Use it.
Design for expansion – Aku exists across NFTs, physical events, apparel, film, and even space. When you design for multiplatform impact, your IP becomes a world—one fans want to inhabit, not just consume.
Stay close to the craft – Even as he scales, Micah remains hands-on with story development, visual design, and the emotional pulse of the work.
Micah Johnson didn’t just pivot careers. He created a blueprint for turning cultural IP into immersive, monetizable ecosystems. His journey is proof that when vision meets innovation, you don’t just make art, you move culture.
We’re entering a new era where emerging tech gives creators unprecedented tools to expand their reach, deepen engagement, and build communities with real ownership and impact.
