I can imagine when humanity is born into the world or society where one of the things that we know which evolves, grows to its maturity state are the living and non-livings. Unfortunately, humanity never imagined one of the things that could also evolve and grow is technology. Technology has surpassed the generation of this world in every shape and form to the point where It has total control of humanity along with our identity and data that we freely share carelessly with those emerging technology not knowing what it would do with such information about ourselves and being.
Technology and every new emerging technologies has taken its spot on the throne as the God in the 21st century that has the power to do as it please with whatever is shared with it in exchange for information that can benefit humanity for good or bad. Unfortunately, it is has been observed that such emerging technologies has developed some serious ethical issues which can take years to be corrected by the very people who developed such emerging technologies. By ethical issues, I mean it has become a serious problem for any person(s) or organization to choose between alternatives that must be evaluated to be either ethical or unethical.
Ethical issues that involves the use of personably identifiable information such as usernames, passwords, credit cards, social security numbers etcetera, technology has not done a good job to protect our identity and data likewise all social network platforms such FB, IG, Twitter, google and much more. And for this reason, this is where the new internet which is also a brand new type of technology known as web 3.0 combine with security has come into play.
It is hard to tell in this day and time what percentage of people in the world actually are aware of a brand new technology known as web 3.0 even though it is often talked about through alternative media not mainstream media. Speaking of mainstream media, it is funny that they choose to just roll out the technology without educating the public about the importance of web 3.0 and what solutions it will bring to humanity. But we all know the mainstream media was not design to educate humanity but to push, force, and enforce whatever benefits their machine or technology (Web 2.0).
Honestly, I am new to the web 3.0 space and I am blessed to have been given insights to what this new technology is all about by some great paradigm shifters as well as through alternative media. Therefore, I am learning and educating myself more about it and of course I intend to enjoy this new technology and its journey of becoming the new God on the throne. Let’s get into a little history of the evolution of technology aka the internet.
Web 1.0: born in the 90’s - 2000’s was developing on the world wide web. This were the days where our parents who usually would be at their job, offices or at home consuming content just by reading through computers. It means web 1.0 was a read-only content web, more like reading a newspaper, magazines, books, etc.
Web 2.0: born in the early 2000’s - present day is a second generation of web-based service where end-users are allowed to consume, read, write, share content and information such as social networks. It is also a web of apps you can login to for almost everything such as online banking, rideshare(Uber, Lyft), grocery shopping, etc.
Web 3.0: an early and upcoming third generation of the internet also known as Dapp i.e decentralized apps. This is the new internet where websites, apps will be interconnected in a decentralized way and information will be process in a smart-human like way through technologies. Here aside from users consuming, reading, writing, sharing content and information, users are also allowed to own their content and information without any centralized authority or entities.
As you can see technology aka the internet is evolving to its perfection. But it just seems that one of this technology is the devil and the other is a God. And the reason I write this is because humanity seems to have fallen in love with web 2.0 (devil) which is a centralized platform where personal data and information is freely, carelessly shared on websites, apps such as social networks, banking apps with no benefits or ownership. It means FB, IG, google, twitter, snapchat, online banking and others can owned our personal data, sell it to make money off our identity, and the worse thing is they can control who can post content, withdraw money from his/her account, etcetera. In fact, they have total control of our identity, personal data and information. This is wild and scary.
But decentralized app (Dapp) known as web 3.0 is the opposite of web 2.0. It is the God or the light of internet because no centralized authority or entities has no control, power, or say in whatever humanity choose to do with his/her personal data, content, finance. The users have 100% control and power over their information and of course users have full ownership of their personal data and information. Web 3.0 relies on a blockchain to store users personably identifiable information. What is a blockchain?, according to Adam Hayes, he defined a blockchain as “a distributed database or ledger that is shared among the nodes of a computer network. As a database, a blockchain stores information electronically in digital format” (Investopedia, 2022).
Cybersecurity specifically deals with threat online whether using your phone, desktop, tablets, to browser the internet. Therefore, perhaps everything we touch on or browse is not 100% but with the blockchain technology in play, I believe that personal data and information would be protected or secured. Before we get into what role does cybersecurity play in web 3.0, there is a model that is designed to guide every security policy known as the trinity of IT security which is; confidentiality, integrity, and availability. This trinity of IT security is known as the CIA triad. To shed more light into what the CIA triad is and how it relates to web 3.0;
Confidentiality: access to personal data and information is strongly restricted and it also ensures the privacy of sensitive information are kept safe and secure. In terms of web 3.0, only the user has 100% access to his/her personal data and information without a third party. Since web 3.0 is decentralized, no central authority or entities can access and own it.
Integrity: it makes sure that users data has not been tampered with. In fact integrity depend upon the confidentiality of the data. In this case, on a decentralized platform or application, as long as the user has access to his/her data no one can modify or tamper with the data except for the user. I believe with web 3.0 data can be sent to another decentralized platform especially in the blockchain without modification.
Availability: This ensures that users personal data and information is available at all times. Here users will avail themselves to their own personal data stored in a decentralized app or the blockchain because their data would be automatically backup and available for access.
The cybersecurity benefits in web 3.0 is the sharing or the flow of data in a peer-to-peer network in decentralized applications without no power or third party in control of the flow of data and information. Therefore, it is trustful.
Lastly, users who have access to decentralized application and use them have full access, control to their data at any given time since it is stored in the blockchain. Privacy of personably identifiable information is very important therefore, data will be safe and protected. Although these rich benefits of web 3.0 in terms of cybersecurity is deontological, there are some web 3.0 cybersecurity risks that can occur and there are ways in which this risks can be preventable if taking the proper steps which I will include and write about in the next article.
