GTE — real-time DEX on MegaETH, with CEX-level speed & liquidity

As a reminder, blockchains are constrained within three areas:
**This trade-off is called the Blockchain Trilemma.
**
Ethereum (the layer 1 that MegaETH is on-top of), focused on points 1 and 3 (decentralization and security). This means that the chain is secure and decentralized, but slow as a tradeoff. Other blockchains like Solana focus on increasing scalability, while sacrificing things like decentralization.
Because of the scalability constraints leading to high gas fees on Ethereum, rollups like MegaETH have emerged as a solution to solve the missing piece in Ethereum’s blockchain trillema (scalability).
MegaETH, as an Ethereum Layer-2, is able to centralize their sequencer (low latency) and use Ethereum-secured DA layers like EigenDA (extremely cheap gas), which leads to an execution environment that is both CHEAPER and FASTER than a blockchain like Solana.
Because MegaETH’s sequencer is centralized, GTE does not have to worry about the network keeping an entire fleet of validators in sync. An example of this would be that if I had a decentralized validator network that has a node in America and a node in Singapore, there is a physics problem in which both of the validators of the blockchain network have to stay in sync (limited by the speed of light).
With MegaETH’s design, you do not have to worry about keeping a set of validators in sync, since it’s a layer-2. This means we’re able to take the same infrastructure that powers the Nasdaq, NYSE, Coinbase, Binance, etc and put it entirely onchain, but in a way that is ACTUALLY competitive with these centralized trading venues.
With GTE, you get the best of both worlds of CeFI and DeFi. CeFi performance and prices. DeFi security and composability.
Really good question! I think it’s important to talk about the benefits of centralized finance and decentralized finance first and then talk about how we try and maximize the benefits of both.
Benefits of Centralized Finance:
The 1st and 2nd pieces are why CEX do 90% of the spot trading volume in the industry. At the end of the day, users are extremely price sensitive and want to get the best prices on their assets. CEXes provide a performant environment for market makers to compete with each other and quote competitively, which leads to tighter spreads for traders there (better prices). However, CEXes can only meaningfully provide liquidity for ‘short-tail’ assets, which is why they have 1/100th of the assets tradable in comparison to DeFi.
Benefits of Decentralized Finance:
A major benefit of DeFi is that YOU own your crypto. That means GTE cannot take your user funds and invest it elsewhere (remember FTX?). The other benefits are that DeFi is permissionless and composable (meaning other protocols can build on top of GTE like a money market) and bring additional yield that would have been previously inaccessible in a CeFi environment. The last benefit is that there are new, exciting primitives like AMMs which have been proven to work for bootstrapping liquidity for long-tail assets (such as memecoins).
Taking these pieces into account, we can conclude that CEXes have better prices (and therefore more volume) because they have better and more performant infrastructure. On the other hand, we can also conclude that DeFi brings benefits in terms of asset security, composability, and types of assets to trade.
At GTE, were focused on combining the best of both worlds for the user. The same performance levels as CEXes (so the same prices), with all the added benefits of DeFi (non-custodial, composable yield, and new primitives).
This means you can trade all the assets that you like on Binance and Coinbase AND also all the assets that you may already enjoy trading in one-spot, knowing you are getting the best possible price for the asset that you’re trading, while also ensuring that we are never touching customer funds.
