WHAT ARE NFTs?
NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, are digital assets that represent ownership of a unique item using blockchain technology. Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, which are fungible and can be exchanged for one another, NFTs are unique and cannot be exchanged on a one-to-one basis.
They can represent a variety of things, including digital art, music, videos, games, collectibles, and even tweets. The value of an NFT is often linked to its exclusivity and market demand.
For example, think about your house and your neighbor's house. Both are houses and serve the same purpose of providing security, but they cannot be exchanged for the same value because they are different and unique in their essence. They were built at different times, with different structures, and different labor, making each one unique. Similarly, your house and your neighbor's house cannot be exchanged for the same value.
Now think about money. Money is fungible; if you have 5 twenty-dollar bills and I have one hundred-dollar bill, if we exchange them, the value remains the same as both of us end up with $100.
But why are NFTs so valuable? This depends greatly on the specific NFT and the collection it is part of, as well as who created it. The most expensive NFT sold to date is a digital artwork titled “Everydays: The First 5000 Days,” created by the artist Beeple (Mike Winkelmann). It was sold for $69.3 million in March 2021 at a Christie’s auction. This piece is a collage of 5,000 images that Beeple created daily over more than 13 years. The sale highlighted the potential of the NFT market and drew significant attention to digital art.
WHERE CAN I BUY THEM?
You can buy NFTs on various specialized marketplace platforms. Here are some of the most popular ones:
OpenSea: One of the largest and most well-known NFT platforms where you can buy, sell, and create NFTs.
Rarible: A platform that allows for the creation and trading of NFTs, with a focus on community involvement.
Foundation: A marketplace focused on digital art, where artists can sell their works as NFTs.
SuperRare: An exclusive platform for digital art artists and collectors, featuring a curated selection of artworks.
Nifty Gateway: Allows you to purchase NFTs with a credit card and is known for its artist “drops.”
Mintable: A user-friendly platform that allows you to create and buy NFTs, suitable for beginners.
Before buying, it’s important to have a cryptocurrency wallet set up, such as MetaMask, and some Ethereum (or the cryptocurrency used by the platform) to make transactions.
