POAP is a term very few have heard about in web3 / NFTs.

It stands for ‘Proof of Attendance Protocol’. It basically a NFT to capture your attendance at an event (example: Twitter Spaces, Clubhouse, Zoom meeting, etc.) organized by a host (of a NFT project, a NFT leader, really any person in web3).

Usually, during the event, secret code is provided by the host to the attendees. The attendees than can ‘mint’ the POAP using the secret code at website where the POAP mint is designed or a related app. (Most common that I’ve seen is: https://poap.xyz).

Typically the secret code is valid only during the event (and few mins/hours later), so those who didn’t attend the event cannot mint the POAP later through word of mouth.

There are various use cases for POAP. For example, in one case, for an upcoming NFT project, the project team can set-up POAP for an event (like Twitter Spaces, etc.) that they want the community members or potential members to attend. They may announce that those with POAP will be white-listed for the mint. So only those who really attended the spaces (and committed their time & attention) are eligible for whitelist.

For a user, POAP history will show the kind of events he/she attended during the course of time.

POAPs are ‘minted’ using a crypto wallet like MetaMask, Coinbase wallet, etc. so it is associated with your web3 account.

We’re still early and we will see some creative ways in which POAPs will be used in web3.
