Frame Language: Vocabulary Is Structure, Is Code, Is Law

How founding vocabulary makes design decisions before anyone does

There is a point in building something with enough precision that the vocabulary you have been using starts to become visible. Not as a description. As a construction.

I had already published articles about game theory's limits as a framework for governance, about the social architecture that lives beneath governance mechanisms, and about the foundational capacities sustainable organizations actually require.

Each of those pieces was circling the same structural problem from different angles, trying to name what I had already lived through without yet having words for it.

However, in the last few months of building coordination standards and the Proof Of Coordination Protocol, the substance of which has been mostly forensic work: tracing failure modes backward to identify the structural conditions that made these failures possible in the first place.

Every path kept pointing me to the same upstream location. Not the mechanisms, even if there are still issues with how we use them. Not the incentive structures that incentivize the straw people that too many mechanisms assume exist. Not the design choices made after the founding document was written, if indeed there was a founding statement of intent written at all. What became clear was that the issue was even more basic and harder to recognize: the problem came down to the vocabulary the founders used to write and speak about what they were doing and what they intended. The inherited language, vocabulary, and terms determined the structural possibilities before anyone sat down to decide anything.

This is the failure mode. Not bad intentions.

The intent and the language failing to match.

When these two key things do not match, the language decides the structure by default, regardless of what was intended. The founders built something other than what they intended, and the vocabulary made the gap between the two invisible.

The word "frame" was already in use for some of what I am describing. I borrowed it.

Frame Language names the attempt to make that construction visible: to show what specific terms are constructing before anyone has decided whether that is what they intend to build.


GravityDAO collapsed during the same period I began this work. I was a co-founder. My co-founders, the working groups, and I made every single one of these mistakes ourselves.

There is still a system hostile to making coordination visible, composable, and valuable. That is real. We were also building inside it and reproducing it without realizing it. GravityDAO dealt with governance conflicts across the DAO ecosystem. We saw these failures up close, from the inside, every day. What was much harder was recognizing that we were making the same mistakes in our own organization.

I did not have names for the mistakes as I made them. None of us did. When the decline came, I tried to fix what I could not yet name. That is how it went. The names came later, through writing, and more precisely, through trying to answer why so many failures kept happening. That forensic work is what made the pattern visible. And what it revealed, when I could finally see it, was that everything I found in other organizations I had already lived from the inside.

Once I could see it, I started looking for it. It showed up almost everywhere.

Frame Language is an attempt to make the fact that words create structures.

Two things appear in almost every Web3 organization as failures, visible in the evidence before any deeper analysis begins. The first: the intent of founders and communities is disconnected from the vocabulary they use to state their purpose. Not because they are dishonest. The vocabulary constructs something other than what they intend. The second: what organizations say publicly diverges noticeably from how they think and talk about their intentions in private. Both patterns show up in governance documents, forum posts, recorded meetings, and in the gap between a founding document and how the founding team actually made decisions.

These are not the structural problems. They are the signal that a structural problem exists underneath. The vocabulary mismatch is the canary. When you follow it, you almost always find something deeper: assumptions encoded in the founding architecture, design decisions made by default before anyone sat down to decide anything, structural possibilities foreclosed before the first line of code was written.

Frame Language is the attempt to make that first visible signal into a working diagnostic tool. And more than diagnostic.

Frame Language is not a glossary of better terms. It is the recognition that language and structure follow each other constitutively. If you use Frame 1 vocabulary to describe what you are building, you will build Frame 1 structures, regardless of intent, because the vocabulary pre-decides which structural possibilities can appear as design decisions, and forecloses all others before anyone sits down to decide anything.

You cannot subvert a structural form while using the vocabulary that form produced to describe what you are building. You will unconsciously reproduce it.

This means the analysis of inheritance is necessary before anything can be built differently. You have to see what you are swallowing before you can choose not to swallow it.

And the more precise vocabulary Frame Language proposes is not a semantic improvement on the existing terms.

It opens structural possibilities that were genuinely unavailable before.

Let's examine one example that comes along with the idea of voting. You cannot specify a ceiling on "voting power" when ownership (token or otherwise) and voting are connected, because the term "ownership" sneaks in the idea that ownership by definition is not only a way to get access to power, but it is also a property right, and property rights have no ceiling by definition. That remains true even if your intent was to think in Ostromian commons-language terms, "those who are affected by a decision should have a hand in making the decision," or the more common "skin in the game" argument from game theory.

A better alternative is to specify a ceiling on "coordination standing," since standing is not a property right but retains the other meanings I just mentioned, and it's more precise and carries less inherited meaning. The vocabulary change is a structural change. One follows the other.


"Code is law" began as a warning.

Lawrence Lessig coined the phrase in 1999 as a descriptive observation, not a design prescription. Software architecture, not government statutes, was becoming the primary regulator of behavior in cyberspace. Code embeds value judgments invisibly, without democratic accountability. He was alarmed by this. His call was for law and code to work in tandem, not for code to replace law.

The crypto community heard it differently. By the time Ethereum formalized the vision of a Turing-complete world computer, "code is law" had become an ideal: a system where no one could break the rules because the rules were the protocol itself. The phrase had been detached from its argumentative context and redeployed in service of the opposite conclusion. The warning became the founding principle.

The stress test came in 2016. The DAO, managing $150 million in ETH, was exploited through a smart contract vulnerability. The attacker did nothing technically wrong. The code did what it was supposed to do. "Code is law" worked exactly as the ideal described. The community forked the blockchain to reverse the exploit. The ideal was shattered not by failure but by success: the code performed correctly, yet the outcome was unacceptable.

The vocabulary remained embedded. The DAO is relaunching. The experiment will repeat unless the terms are changed, and not just in smart contracts.

These failure modes are examples of the pattern that I created the conception of "Frame Language" to make visible: a phrase stripped of the caution that gave it meaning, inherited as if it were a design prescription, built into the architecture of an entire ecosystem. The structural assumption was never chosen. It arrived inside the vocabulary.

GravityDAO existed because the ideal of "code is law" was insufficient. We were the organization called in when the code could not determine what the community needed to be resolved.

We dealt with coordination failures, governance conflicts, and structural breakdowns that no smart contract could address. And we reproduced the same vocabulary that produced those failures in our own founding documents, our own governance design, our own founding decisions. We called it something different. It was the same thing.


DAO governance and the various Web3 organizational experiments did not invent any of this. It inherited it from every institutional form that preceded it, named it decentralization, and presented it as new.

I think that this is true because vocabulary and language seem, on the surface, like a secondary concern. If your organization has a governance problem, the people who study governance problems will tell you to look at incentive structures, voting mechanisms, treasury design, and decision-making thresholds. This is a reasonable position, and it is wrong in a specific way that matters.

Vocabulary does not describe structures. It constructs them.

The structural conditions you can build are bounded by what your vocabulary can name, because what your vocabulary cannot name cannot appear as a design decision; it can only be absent.

This is not a philosophical claim about the relationship between language and reality. It is a practical observation about how organizations get built.

A founding document or verbal intent between participants, written or spoken about in vocabulary that names token ownership (and therefore influence, by design) as a property right, you then cannot specify a ceiling on how much influence any single holder can accumulate, because "ceiling on a property right" is not a coherent phrase within that vocabulary. The protection is not rejected. It is unthinkable.

The vocabulary imported the inherited meaning before a single decision was made.

Linguists arrived at the same observation from a different direction. Chomsky's work on generative grammar showed that language shapes what can be expressed, not merely how existing thoughts are encoded.

Wittgenstein's formulation is even more direct: "the limits of my language are the limits of my world."

These are independent convergences on the same structural claim, entirely outside organizational design.

This is also the answer to why non-cooperative game theory keeps generating the problems it is supposed to solve, and why cooperative game theory (the body of work that takes seriously that humans actually cooperate) does not go far enough.

Non-cooperative game theory fails not because of wrong mathematics but because its foundational vocabulary encodes a particular theory of what humans are: the rational actor maximizing individual utility, as if it were a finding of absolute fact rather than an assumption, or design decision.

Inside game theory, this assumption is required to make the math work, but it also creates an illusory, idealized, flattened idea of a participant in that system, and every system we build on top of it is built on a straw man.

That encoding forecloses the structural conditions under which genuine cooperation becomes the default rather than the exception, because the vocabulary has no category for an actor who is not primarily self-interested. Every mechanism designed from inside that vocabulary is designed to manage self-interest, which means it is designed to produce the behavior it assumes.

Cooperative game theory states that cooperation is possible and studies the conditions under which it occurs. It is a genuine advance. But it is still working within a vocabulary that treats cooperation as the thing that needs to be explained, as the deviation from the competitive baseline, rather than as the baseline that gets disrupted. The disruptions, and what disrupts them, are what need explaining. If cooperation is the baseline, the question changes entirely: not what makes cooperation possible against the competitive default, but what disrupts it and what does the disrupting. That is a different research program. Mechanism design, like non-cooperative game theory, is built on a competitive vocabulary and has no category for it. The vocabulary removed the question before the work began.

Worse, why would it make sense to build coordination and cooperation systems on top of a language entirely focused on competition and a vocabulary that cannot, by definition, describe its actual participants?


Why Don't We Notice These Problems?

Most people who have tried to proofread their own writing know this experience: you read the same sentence four times and miss the error every time. Not because you are inattentive. Because you are not reading what is on the page, you are reading what you expect to be there. The word you typed is not something you are looking at. It is something you are looking through. The error sits at the same distance from the page as the correction would. What differs is not what is there but what you are able to see.

The Three Frames are not perspectives someone chooses or stances someone adopts. They are structural conditions of what is accessible at a given moment, shaped by the vocabulary the practitioner is working in.

A DAO founder sits down to write their governance document. They are trying to build something more equitable than what came before. They write "voting power" into the document because that is the vocabulary available to describe decision-making. They are not deciding, at that moment, to treat influence as something you can hold and accumulate without limit. They are not deciding that whoever accumulates the most tokens should control the most outcomes. Those structural assumptions arrived within the term. "Voting power" does not announce them. It presents itself as a neutral description of how coordination works. The property right idea sneaks in the idea of no limitation on accumulation.

Most DAO founders aren't writing all this down formally, either, which is its own problem. Because it's often spoken rather than written, we don't pause to parse out the use of terms we already think we know.

More than neutral, in fact. "Voting" arrives carrying the moral weight of democratic legitimacy. Participation. Voice. The principle that decisions should be made by the people they affect. That moral weight is what makes the structural assumptions of "voting power" particularly difficult to examine. To question whether voting is the right structural arrangement is to be heard as questioning democratic participation itself. The failure modes stay invisible, not because no one is looking, but because the term has made looking feel like an act of bad faith.

"Governance" does not announce itself as assuming a unitary authority structure as the natural form of organizational life. It appears merely as the name for the thing being built, but it sneaks in a specific idea about power, responsibility, and accountability along with it. "Stakeholder" does not appear to exclude, by its own structure, anyone without formal legal or financial standing. It appears to name everyone who matters. But it sneaks in exclusion by definition.

These terms are not objects or concepts that the founder(s) are examining. They are the lens through which the founder is thinking. And when the lens carries a structural assumption, that assumption is not designed around or ruled out. It is already in place before the first design decision is made.

This is what a Frame 1 term does. It carries a structural assumption and presents it as simply how things are. The vocabulary has already made a design decision before the founder has. What the founder can see is the coordination mechanism they are building. What they cannot see is the structural condition that the vocabulary has already established.

The Frames name that structural condition. Not to assign blame. The founder's intention was real. What naming makes possible is seeing the gap between what was intended and what the vocabulary has already built, so that intention can reach the design rather than run into a structure decided before the work began.

Voting is where this becomes most visible and often most protected. To question whether "voting power" is the right structural arrangement is to be heard as questioning democratic participation, community ownership, and decentralization.

The moral status of that term (and some others, like decentralization) adds a layer of protection against structural examination that most other Frame 1 vocabulary does not have. The result is that the many structural failure modes of voting remain unexamined.

Their mere inclusion is treated as proof that the system is working, since, by convention and social agreement, those terms are deemed Universally Good.

Those failure modes follow directly from the vocabulary. If influence is a property right that scales with accumulation, then whoever accumulates the most has the most influence. That is not a risk. That is the system performing correctly.

A vote in which most participants do not vote, where those who do are systematically different from those affected by the outcome, and where large holders have effectively settled the question in private channels before the formal vote produces a result that is legitimate by procedure and compromised by structure simultaneously. The governance record captures the vote. It does not capture what preceded it. An outside observer reading that record sees deliberation where the actual coordination occurred elsewhere.

There is also something quieter that the vocabulary removes without announcing it. "Voting power" refers to the minimum participation concept of a quorum. But quorum, as typically implemented, carries its own failure modes that the vocabulary cannot see. A quorum can be set to zero. A quorum satisfied entirely by a single large holder is procedurally valid — it does not require distributed participation, only aggregate token weight. The concept of distributed support, where a broad base of smaller holders must carry meaningful weight regardless of what concentrated holdings do, has no category in the vocabulary.

Quorum is a floor, but it is a Frame 1 floor: it counts tokens, not participants, and it has no ceiling equivalent that would control or defend against unlimited property holdings, aka influence over the entire organization. This is how a 'decentralized theater' functions, in fact. An organization with floors and no ceilings is one whale away from being entirely centralized.

The idea that there should be a maximum amount of influence any single holder can accumulate has nowhere to land in the vocabulary of such an organization and thus is absent by default from participants' minds. A ceiling on a property right is not a coherent phrase inside a vocabulary that names a token holding, aka influence, as a property right. These are not controversial ideas. They are structurally unavailable from inside the vocabulary. That unavailability was not decided. It was built before anyone sat down to design anything.

This entire concept of Frame Language was created because you cannot fix this by merely swapping out one term for another. Telling someone their terms are structurally broken or totalizing does not make them able to see it. What the method must do is specify what each term has quietly removed from the available options for thinking: make it visible, put it back on the table, so that the design decision made by default can be made deliberately and with a clear statement of terms that aligns with your intent instead.


None of this is about bad faith. The people building DAO governance are, by and large, trying to do something genuinely important: to build structures that include rather than exclude, that distribute rather than concentrate, that make decisions accountable to the people they affect rather than to whoever accumulated the most. The intent is real, and the problem it addresses is real. The gap between that intent and what the available vocabulary allows someone to build is precisely what Frame Language is designed to make visible.

The clearest evidence that something is wrong with the vocabulary is the list of problems practitioners spend the most time 'working around'.

Decentralized governance is slow. Token voting produces whale dominance. Forum discussions rarely reach decisions. Proposal participation is low. Large holders negotiate privately and vote publicly. Every one of these is treated as an implementation problem, something to be solved with better tooling, better incentive design, better process.

None of them is an implementation problem.

They are performing the vocabulary correctly, and so the failure modes they produce are both inevitable and predictable because no one noticed what other meanings these well-intended terms snuck in with them.

Seen in this clearer and more precise understanding of language, vocabulary, and terms, a common phrase like "decentralized governance" is not a different structural form from centralized governance.

It is merely "distributed" Frame 1 thinking: many approval chains rather than one, with the same underlying assumption that whoever holds formal standing controls outcomes. It is slower to work within precisely because distributing a control structure creates coordination overhead without changing what is being coordinated.

"Voting power" as a property right produces whale dominance because that is what property rights do: they scale with accumulation, and whoever accumulates the most has the most. These are not side effects. They are the design. Even Quadratic Funding and Voting don't completely fix this either, and they introduce their own failure modes.

The terms practitioners most readily invoke as moral anchors are community governance, decentralization, stakeholder inclusion, and democratic legitimacy. These are also the terms whose operational downsides require the most engineering to work around.

This is not a coincidence. The moral protection around a term is roughly proportional to the structural problem it is carrying invisibly. The term that cannot be questioned is the one whose structural assumption does the most unseen work.

If you have used the news website Ground.news, you have seen a version of this at work: the same story covered by different sources, each selecting a different frame. That website shows what is foregrounded and what is pushed out of attention.

That concept, which Gregory Bateson named in 1955 and George Lakoff extended into political language, is real and useful and really required in a confusing and complex arena of life. What Frame Language is pointing to goes further and applies to another confusing, fast-moving, and complex part of our lives.

Bateson's framing describes selection from a set of possibilities already present. Frame Language asks which possibilities were removed from the set before anyone arrived to make a choice. Knowing that a story was framed a certain way is useful. It does not tell you which stories could not be told at all, as this problem with language does.

Non-cooperative game theory runs deepest here because it operates at the level of human nature rather than individual terms. Most mechanism design in Web3 is built on a foundational claim: that participants will defect if they can, free-ride if they can, and cannot be trusted to coordinate voluntarily without incentive structures that make cooperation their dominant strategy.

What makes this claim particularly effective as a totalizing move is that it simultaneously treats people somehow as both absurdly simple and as formidably strategic.

  • Simple: reducible to a single utility function, responsive only to token incentives, interchangeable, context-free, without genuine cooperative motivation or relational loyalty or commitment that holds under pressure.

  • Strategic: capable of identifying and exploiting every defection opportunity, always finding the optimal self-interested move in complex multi-player situations.

These two assumptions coexist without friction in the theory because neither is actually a finding about human nature. Both are assumptions required for the mathematical apparatus to work.

The practical consequence is that you design a system for the simplified actor and get the simplified behavior, not because that was what the participants brought, but because you have removed every structural condition under which something more complex would be possible. Genuine cooperative motivation needs relational context, recognized contribution, and a sense that the coordination structure is built for the people in it rather than against them.

Mechanism design built on rational-defection assumptions systematically destroys those conditions in the process of protecting against the behavior it assumes. It is the vocabulary's most complete self-fulfilling prophecy: treat cooperation as a naive fantasy to be protected against, and you will spend enormous effort protecting against it, and you will succeed.

This is presented to us in non-cooperative form, not as a design assumption, but as a finding about what humans are. The entire apparatus of tokenomics, incentive alignment, and mechanism design is built on it. And it is the same language problem at a deeper level: a totalizing claim about human nature that removes an entire category of structural possibility before any design decision has been made.

Let's have a deeper look now at what is meant by Frame Language, and what each frame looks like.

That account comes from three places.

The first is named by its effects: extraction, cost externalization, accumulation of influence without limit, and accountability that flows only upward toward formal authority. Frame 1 names these not as structural design but rather as natural fact.

The second source is Samkhya, one of the oldest systematic Indian philosophical traditions, whose name means "enumeration." Its contribution is a map of three concurrent qualities that operate in shifting ratios and determine what is accessible to perception at any given moment. In the operational vocabulary of this article: Suppression, the quality that reduces what is available, not by hiding it, but by removing the conditions under which it appears; Projection, the quality that places a recognizable object in place of what is actually present; Perception, the capacity for recognizing what was always there. Samkhya is Frame 2 at its maximum development: the most precise structural map available. From the Advaita Vedanta standpoint, it is accurate at the structural level and still within the appearance it is mapping. Swami Krishnananda's comparative analysis of Western philosophy, examining traditions from Socrates to Whitehead, demonstrates that the entire Western tradition operates within a single domain. Non-cooperative game theory is not an error within that tradition. It is one of its most consistent expressions.

The third source is Advaita Vedanta, which is my lineage. I lived in a Hindu ashram for five years. What Advaita contributes that no structural map can provide is a precise account of what recognition is, as distinct from construction. Frame 3 is not something you build toward or arrive at through better structural analysis. It is what is recognized when enough of what was suppressing it has been reduced. The recognition does not create what it recognizes. When you finally see the error on the page, you did not put it there. It was always there. What changed was your capacity to access it. The Innate Totality names what that recognition encounters: a whole that holds all its expressions as constitutive, dynamic, prior to any of its manifestations. No single existing word captures this. Foundation implies stasis. Essence imports Aristotelian substance ontology. Innate Totality names what those words cannot.

The central structural move in this framework is borrowed from Ken Wilber's "Transcend and Include": transclusion, the move where transcending and including are one act rather than two. Abstraction moves toward unity by leaving things behind and reconnecting them later, which means exclusion was temporarily possible. Transclusion never permits exclusion during the move. Frame 3 is the outlook in which this move is always already complete.


The description begins with Frame 3, not because it is the destination, but because it is the source. Frame 1 and Frame 2 are not stages on a path toward Frame 3. They are partial expressions of what Frame 3 actually is, each borrowing a different class of its expressions and treating that class as the complete picture. To describe either accurately requires first saying what they are partial expressions of.

Frame 3 is not a structural condition, a position, or a named practice. It is an outlook and attitude that holds all conditions and structures without collapsing them into a limited framing. Frame 1 and Frame 2 are not below it. They are partial expressions of what it actually is, seen from inside the limitation that makes each of them what it is.

This outlook holds the forming and the dissolving, the visible and the structural, without preference for either. It can work in Frame 1 vocabulary when the context requires it and Frame 2 vocabulary when structural precision is needed, without being captured by either. From within this outlook, neither vocabulary presents itself as complete. The partial is visible as partial.

Structural analysis cannot develop it. Practice can, but only practice that is itself transclusive: where moving forward and carrying everything forward are one move rather than two. Not transcending and then including. Transcending that is the including.

Frame 3 has one failure mode. The outlook that holds all expressions without preference can become identified with that holding as an identity. From that identification, the practitioner refuses to move into the expressions that the Innate Totality is always already making. This looks like Frame 3 from the outside. It uses Frame 3 language. What distinguishes it is the refusal: the insistence on remaining at the level of the totality rather than moving into its expressions. That refusal is the same structural error that operates at Frame 1 and Frame 2, now operating at the level of the totality itself. The most sophisticated version of the original mistake.

Two patterns appear in documents as Frame 3, but are not.

The first: Frame 3 language is deployed precisely when a structural condition is being challenged. "That is too Frame 2. We need to think from abundance, not from a scarcity mindset about power." A challenge to specify a ceiling on how much coordination standing any single holder can accumulate meets this response. Frame 3 is invoked not to name the Innate Totality but to license leaving the structure unspecified. This is not Frame 3, seeing beyond the need for precision. Because Frame 2 structural conditions are expressions of the Innate Totality, Frame 3 makes precision requirements more necessary, not less. When Frame 3 language appears as a license to skip them, what is present is Frame 1 using the language of the totality to protect the surface from examination.

The second: vocabulary that names Frame 3 as a position an organization can occupy. "Our governance embodies regenerative values." "We operate from a whole-systems perspective." "Our design holds both individual and collective." These sentences treat an outlook as an adoptable identity. Frame 2 cannot imagine an outlook that is not itself a structural form, and when it reaches toward Frame 3, it produces a more elevated structural form with better-stated values. An organization claiming to embody Frame 3 is making a Frame 2 claim in Frame 3 language.


One analogy holds all three. Frame 1 is the shadow a person casts: an accurate, flat projection of the surface that tells you where the person is and roughly what shape they take. Frame 2 is a three-dimensional statue of the person: it shows structure and depth that the shadow cannot, yet it is still a representation rather than the person. Frame 3 is the person: not a better representation, but the living source from which both the shadow and the statue derive their partial accuracy.

Frame 1 is what is accessible when the visible, manifest expressions of the Innate Totality are all that is available. Token holdings. Current votes. Treasury balance. Formal standing. These are real. They are genuine expressions of what the Innate Totality makes visible at the surface.

The shadow is accurate. It tells you where the person is and roughly what shape they take. It does not tell you how they are structured internally, what holds them together, or what they are capable of that the silhouette does not show. The shadow is not a failed description. It is an accurate description of the surface projection. Frame 1 is accurate at that register. The limitation is treating the projection as the complete picture.

This is what Frame 1 borrows from Frame 3: the genuine reality of visible expressions. That borrowing, limited to surfaces only, is what makes Frame 1 what it is. The limitation and the character are the same thing. What is suppressed is not present somewhere else in a hidden location.

It is structurally unavailable from inside vocabulary that names only the surface. "Accountability" in Frame 1 vocabulary accurately names something real: there is a reporting relationship, formal authority, and an upward direction. What is suppressed is that the direction is a design decision rather than a natural fact, and that obligation can run toward other parties entirely. The visible part is real. The structural conditions beneath it are not accessible from inside Frame 1.


Frame 2 is accessible when the structural conditions beneath the visible surface are present. It can name what Frame 1 cannot: obligation direction, consent architecture, cost-bearing parties, and the difference between a behavioral directive and an independently evaluable structural condition.

The statue shows what the shadow cannot: three-dimensional structure, the relationships that hold the form together, the depth beneath the surface. The most precise statue is still a statue. It is a representation of what can be captured in a fixed form. Frame 2 is accurate at that register. The limitation is treating the representation as the territory.

This is what Frame 2 borrows from Frame 3: the genuine reality of structural conditions. That borrowing, limited to structural conditions and carrying a preference for structural health over pathology, is what makes Frame 2 what it is. The preference is not a flaw. It is constitutive: it is what makes Frame 2 structurally generative rather than merely descriptive. But it creates blind spots for arrangements outside the recognized structural forms, which Frame 2 tends to force into recognizable categories rather than naming what is actually there.

Samkhya is Frame 2 at its maximum development: the most precise structural representation available, and still a representation. The Western philosophical tradition, as Swami Krishnananda's comparative analysis demonstrates, operates within the same domain. Frame 2 does not fail to be Frame 3. It is Frame 3 seen partially, from inside the structural conditions that make it what it is.


Frames 1 and 2 have genuine access to what the person actually is. The shadow is cast by the person. The statue was made from the likeness of the person. Neither is arbitrary nor invented. The movement from Frame 1 vocabulary through Frame 2 vocabulary toward fuller recognition is possible because neither limitation is total occlusion. What is recognized was always present, only suppressed. When enough of what was suppressing it is reduced, what becomes accessible was always there. The movement is possible because each frame is a real, if partial, expression of the person.


The framework is straightforward to describe and genuinely difficult to apply. The difficulty is not conceptual. It is that the most common cases a practitioner encounters are not clean Frame 1 terms sitting in load-bearing positions. They are terms that have already undergone partial reform: vocabulary that sounds like it has made the move to Three-Dimensional but has not, or vocabulary that has the surface texture of structural precision without specifying any structural condition, or vocabulary that invokes the totality to avoid the very precision work the framework requires.

The first kind appears immediately when someone who has read the framework tries to apply it to an actual document and finds that the document already uses reform vocabulary. The governance documents of more thoughtful DAOs rarely say "accountability" without modification. They say "multi-directional accountability." They say "community accountability." They say "accountability to our values." The modifier is doing something. It is performing the move. It is not making it.

"Multi-directional accountability" is a useful case because the reform intention is visible and genuine. The word "multi-directional" is there precisely because someone understood that accountability, as normally used, runs in one direction and wanted to name the fact that it should run in more than one. The understanding is correct. The vocabulary does not deliver what the understanding requires. Accountability's structural mechanism, reporting to whoever holds formal authority, is carried in the head noun, not the modifier. The modifier can point toward a direction. It cannot change the mechanism of the noun it modifies. What "multi-directional obligation direction" would require, and "multi-directional accountability" cannot produce, is the specification of which party's obligation runs toward, through what mechanism, and enforced by what structure. The modifier performs the aspiration. The structural condition remains unspecified.

"Decentralized governance" works the same way. Governance names authority over participants. Decentralizing that authority distributes it to more nodes without changing what it is. The DAOs that have struggled most with slow decision-making, incoherent proposals, and coordination failures across working groups are not failing at decentralization. They are succeeding at it. Distributing a Frame 1 control structure produces exactly the same difficulties as decentralization. The vocabulary named what was intended, less concentration, and delivered what it structurally produces.

The second kind is subtler and more pervasive, because it has the surface texture of Three-Dimensional vocabulary without specifying any structural condition. "We are accountable to our community" sounds more precise than "we are accountable." It names a direction. The direction is the community. But the community is not specified: who it is, what standing its members hold, how they verify the accountability, and what happens when the accountability is not met. The sentence has performed precision without providing it. An independent observer reading the founding document cannot determine whether this accountability is present or absent because the sentence contains nothing independently evaluable. It names a direction for obligation. It does not name the obligation.

This matters because vocabulary performing precision without providing it is actively harder to audit than vocabulary that makes no precision claim at all. "Governance" is easy to see as Two-Dimensional once the framework is in place. "We are accountable to our community" requires looking at what the sentence actually specifies rather than what it sounds like it specifies. The Projection capacity is doing particularly active work here: the sentence generates a vivid image of an organization answerable to its members. The structural condition, a mechanism that makes the answer real and verifiable, is entirely absent. The image fills the space where the mechanism should be.

Voting is where all three patterns converge at once, which is why the moral protection around it holds so well. Strip it back, and you can see each layer doing its work.

"One token, one vote" is the clearest Two-Dimensional case. Influence is named as a property right that scales with accumulation. What gets suppressed is not just the idea that influence could work differently, but the entire category of protection that would make a different arrangement possible. Once influence is a property right, the thought that there should be a maximum amount any single holder can accumulate has nowhere to go. There is no word for it in the vocabulary. Neither is there a word for a minimum threshold of distributed support that a proposal must meet, regardless of concentrated weight. These are not radical ideas. They are not ideas at all from inside that vocabulary. The vocabulary removed them before anyone decided to.

Quadratic voting and quadratic funding are the most careful current attempts to rebalance this. They are not naive; they address real failure modes of simple token weighting and represent genuine structural thought. They are also still rebalancing a property-rights system rather than changing what the system is. Quadratic voting makes the cost of additional influence scale more steeply, reducing whale dominance without eliminating it, and introduces Sybil attacks as a new failure mode that must be addressed with identity verification, which in turn introduces its own failure modes. Quadratic funding favors breadth of support over concentration of wealth, which is a meaningful improvement, and generates collusion rings as the new failure mode. The accumulation of mechanism design around a Frame 1 structure is its own signal: each solution to the vocabulary's failure modes produces new failure modes that require more mechanism design. The vocabulary is performing correctly. The mechanism design is working around what the vocabulary is built on.

"Community governance through voting" performs precision without providing any. It names a community and a mechanism. Neither is specified. Who constitutes the community is left open: a single large holder is as much a part of the community as anyone else under this vocabulary. What threshold a vote must meet, what the vote actually decides, who can verify the result, and how the mechanism can be revised: none of this is in the phrase. The image it generates is vivid: collective deliberation, shared ownership, democratic participation. The structural conditions that would make those things real are not there.

Then comes "democratic legitimacy," and this is where the protection becomes complete. When someone asks why influence should scale with holdings rather than being structured around distributed participation, the answer that lands hardest is not a structural argument. It is an appeal to democratic values, to participation, to the principle that those with skin in the game should have a voice. This is Frame 3-adjacent language doing Frame 1 protection work. It closes off examination not by answering the structural question, but by making the act of asking it feel like a challenge to something sacred. The three layers: vocabulary that suppresses the structural alternative, reform language that performs precision without providing it, legitimacy language that makes examination feel suspect: none of this is a deliberate construction. They have assembled themselves because each one reinforces the others, and together they are very hard to move.

The third case involves vocabulary that reaches toward Frame 3 and produces something that is not Frame 3. Two versions of this appear in actual documents.

The first: Frame 3 language is deployed precisely when a structural condition is being challenged. "That is too Frame 2. We need to think from abundance, not from a scarcity mindset about power." The challenge to specify a ceiling on how much coordination standing any single holder can accumulate meets this response. Frame 3 is invoked not to name the Innate Totality but to avoid naming a structural condition. The invocation licenses leaving the structure unspecified. This is not Frame 3, seeing beyond the need for precision. Frame 3, as the actual totality that Frame 2 structural conditions are expressions of, makes the precision requirements more necessary, not less. When it appears as a license to skip them, what is actually present is the Two-Dimensional structural condition using the language of the totality to protect the surface from examination.

The second: vocabulary that names a Frame 3-adjacent structural condition as a position an organization can occupy. "Our governance embodies regenerative values." "We operate from a whole-systems perspective." "Our design holds both individual and collective." These sentences describe Frame 3 in Frame 2 vocabulary; they produce a named practice or philosophy that can be adopted and claimed. Frame 2 cannot imagine a structural condition that is not itself a structural form, and when it reaches toward Frame 3, it produces a more elevated structural form with better stated values. The result is a named position. Frame 3 is not a named position. An organization claiming to embody it is making a Frame 2 claim in Frame 3 language.

What all four of these cases share: the Suppression capacity is doing work that the vocabulary makes invisible. In the first two cases, it suppresses the idea that the structural mechanism has not changed while the vocabulary has. In the third, it suppresses the fact that the structural condition being challenged still needs to be specified. In the fourth, it suppresses the naming of Frame 3 as an organizational attribute, which is precisely the move Frame 3 cannot make: a claim, a position, or an identity. The vocabulary in each case generates a vivid image of the intention. What was always required, the structural specification, the independently evaluable condition: these become visible when the image is moved.

What changes is not what is in the vocabulary. What changes is the epistemic condition of the person reading it.

What the method does when it works is not complicated to describe. It makes visible a structural condition that was always there. "Voting power" as a name: influence as a property right. That was always what the term was doing. The audit does not discover this; it makes it available to the person who has been thinking with the term rather than about it. What changes is not what is in the vocabulary. What changes is the epistemic condition of the person reading it.

This is why the practice matters as much as the method. Once applied, the audit shows which specific terms have been suppressed in which documents. Applied repeatedly, to one's own vocabulary, to terms one has been using without examining, to the foundational language of one's own organization, it does something different. Each time the capacity for recognition is exercised, it is exercised. The practitioner who has looked carefully at what "accountability" suppresses, what "governance" suppresses, and what "community governance through voting" suppresses, and has, in each case, arrived at the structural condition that was always there, is not just learning a method. They are repeatedly experiencing the structure of recognition itself. The capacity for recognition: to see what is actually present rather than what the vocabulary makes plausible. That is the capacity the practice is building.

This cannot be installed directly. There is no version of the framework that delivers the recognition on a schedule, or produces it as a consequence of having read the right documents, or arrives through correct vocabulary use alone. The practice reduces the conditions of suppression. The recognition happens in the practitioner. What the framework offers is not a path to Frame 3 but an expression of the Innate Totality that is useful at any structural condition, one that meets a practitioner where they are and that, through repeated genuine attention, produces in them a cumulative encounter with what was always there.

The vocabulary work itself is not a completion. What Frame 2 makes nameable is more than what Frame 1 made nameable, and far less than what the Innate Totality contains. The two-dimensional surface expressions that Frame 1 organizational vocabulary developed over centuries, and the three-dimensional structural conditions that Frame 2 vocabulary is still developing: these are two channels of expression from a much larger available set. Naming obligation direction, cost-bearing parties, consent architecture, and coordination standing: this is a first extension. There are relational, temporal, and ecological modes of expression that neither organizational vocabulary has developed, and that will need their own vocabulary when the conditions for naming them are present. The project is genuinely open.

What the method can do is name what has been suppressed, make available the structural condition that was always there, and offer a practice that builds the capacity for recognition over time. What it cannot do is remove the need for the practitioner to bring genuine attention, to be actually moved by what becomes visible, rather than using the framework as a more sophisticated way of defending a position already held. The vocabulary that performs Frame 2 without providing it exists in organizations as much as it exists in founding documents. A practitioner who uses the audit as legitimacy signaling rather than as recognition practice produces the same thing in their analysis that "multi-directional accountability" produces in governance documents: the performance of precision without the structural condition.

The place to start is the vocabulary already in use. Not because the vocabulary is the whole problem (the mechanisms, the incentive structures, the legal forms are also the problem) but because the vocabulary is where the problem is invisible, and invisible problems cannot be decided against. "Voting power," "governance," "stakeholder," "accountability": each one carries a structural assumption that the people using it are, in many cases, genuinely trying to work against. Making that visible does not fix the structure. It makes the structure available for the first time as a design decision rather than a description of how things simply are. That is where deliberate work becomes possible.
