It’s no secret that the current state of the world is concerning! TBH, I felt completely helpless for years until I came across Web3 so I have a lot of love & hope for the movement 🫶
In this short blog, I’ll explain what Web3 is and why I think every young person should get involved. IMO, Web3 is our golden chance to create positive change that will help us avoid devastating scenarios related to climate change, world conflict, social unrest, etc 🙏🏽
Web3 is the 3rd era of the internet. The Web1 era introduced personal computers (ex. Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, etc). The Web2 era introduced digital communities and tools (ex. Facebook, Google, etc). Web3 introduces community-owned (aka decentralized) tools and economies (ex. Ethereum, Litter Token, etc).
Web3 is the “catch-all” term for things you’ve probably heard about recently — things like blockchain, crypto, Bitcoin, NFTs, DAOs, Dogecoin, etc.
A blockchain is computer code that tracks transactions. I like to think of blockchains as similar to writing on caves to track what was exchanged (ex. this person traded 20 beans for 2 bananas on this day). The only difference between writing on caves and blockchain is that a blockchain is managed by computers and not humans. The computers follow a set of rules, track every transaction that happens on a blockchain, and the transactions are permanent / can’t be changed.
Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether, Dogecoin & many more are the money of Web3. They are digital & decentralized which means that they are not maintained by any one person, organization or institution. They are maintained by computers and built on top of blockchains (for example, Ether is the cryptocurrency of the Ethereum blockchain).
NFTs prove that someone owns a digital asset. Currently it’s hard to prove who owns what on the internet. NFTs solve this by using a blockchain to make digital ownership clear. With NFTs, artists can prove they own digital art pieces, musicians can prove they own their music, internet users can prove they own their profile picture or that they attended a specific concert on a specific date. The NFT space has been hot because people are using digital asset ownership to create community (ex. If you own this picture of an ape then you get exclusive access to this upcoming yacht party). This is a cool way to create community in new ways (although I would argue that exclusivity is something we should be moving away from and not towards).

Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs) are what most excite me about the Web3 space. They’re basically companies that live on the blockchain (so every action is recorded) and are completely community-run (aka there is no CEO or Executive Board that calls the shots).

Web3 is built on the concept of community participation. It gives us a way to work together at a global scale to bring forth the change that we want to see. Do you want to help battle climate change? Let’s create a DAO that does this. Do you think mental health services should be free and accessible for everyone? Let’s create a DAO that makes this possible.
In a way, the Web3 values of decentralization & community ownership allow us to re-envision society and make that a reality. The higher power must have given us the internet for a reason — let’s use it to build a beautiful world governed by love and joy.
The Web3 space is confusing and uses a bunch of big words that are hard for anyone to understand. I tried to write this in the most understandable way possible, but I’m sure this piece won’t be enough to make you feel like you fully understand the space.
PLEASE feel free to reach out or ask any questions that come to mind - I am learning along with you!
