Addiction Programs

I used to have some bad addictions.

Marijuana was one of the worst.

It created all kinds of problems.

When I finally admitted that I had an addiction, my natural response was to try and eliminate it.

But, my attempt was misguided.

It’s not that I didn’t succeed in removing the actual addiction (I did), it’s that I attempted to deny the fact that I have an addictive personality.

What I’ve come to accept, albeit slowly, is that I have this aspect to my personality.

And, instead of trying to suppress it or deny it, I’ve just focused on switching out the bad addictions for ones that are, well, less bad and some that are even good.

Now I’m addicted to things like yoga, stress minimization, planning, among others.

It still has its downsides.

For example, I am usually so excited to execute my morning routine of exercise, meditation, blogging, prayer, and Spanish practice that I can’t sleep soundly or for long enough.

But, the key point is that I’ve accepted that my personal operating system has an “Addictive Program” and now I just focus on using that program on things that are net positives instead of trying to uninstall the program.
