Lately, I have been reading about metaverse, a world of endless possibilities. The more I read about it, the more I want to embrace it. The more I see, the more I fall in love with. I am just awestruck with how humans are blessed with so much creativity and talent. I could have never imagined the sci-fi novels/movies becoming a reality. It’s like the movies coming to life, we are going to experience what Keanu Reeves could do in Matrix or what Sam Worthington could do in Avatar flying the mountain banshees (dragon like predators) and where one can build their city of dreams just like Ellen Page in Inception. Incredible! Isn’t it? The wait is not long, many big players in the market already have already entered the meta (not the FB one) and everyone is betting on this “as the next big thing”. So come lets see what I have learnt from my findings? I will keep it short and crisp.
According to my limited understanding, here is what I’ve understood?
What is Metaverse? In my lingo, metaverse is simply an architecture of mind. Bringing the possibilities to life, to a more tangible-like form.
How to enter meta? With the help of an AR/VR headsets and glasses, one can enter the virtual world - meet a friend who lives miles across, attend a live concert, game at the next level with friends or even study a science project together, prototype a product, try different outfits in the shopping mall, check the live traffic jams on maps, and so much more.
Whats the Vision? Metaverse will be used in every corner and field. That’s what it looks like. Similar to how TV got into every houses and how mobile got into every hands. So the day is not far away, where we will have an AI Jarvis the moment we where the AR glasses.. hehehe… surreal!
Benefits? It’s going to be wonderful for recreational activity. And definitely it’s going to benefit the gaming industry, commercial industry, social media, entertainment industry, health industry and last but not the least, the education industry. Now with education in mind, I am imagining how metaverse could actually help in aiding learners with dyslexia or any other learning disability, helping out many slow learners, average learners to get a deeper understanding of a concept, as a matter of fact, any learners.
Limitations and disadvantages?
Cost will be an issue because the AR/VR sets or glasses will be expensive, only people like Tony Stark can own it for now.
Harmful for eyes - excessive use can lead to eyesight loss
In front of the older generation, I probably might look stupid wearing a headgear and moving my hands and legs in the air.
Social connectivity outside but less inside- what I am trying to imply here is that everyone will want to enter their own space rather than sitting down with their own family inside the four walls. We would be socialising more in the metaverse than the realverse. What the heck, anyways we are doing it with our phones isn’t it?
No escape from responsibilities - metaverse can’t help you in this, you as a parent have to feed your child, bathe your child and take them out for play and you still need to do your laundry, cook food, clean the toilet and kitchen, make the bed before sleep. So, yes welcome back to reality, there is no escape from our responsibilities.
To conclude, no matter how much I like the idea of metaverse becoming a reality but I also need to remind myself, if I ever own an AR gear, I have to draw a line because I have a home to run, family to look after and a relationship to nurture with love and care.
