PinWan on May 2, the operating organization behind Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), announced that it would no longer accept donations of cryptocurrency. WMF said in a statement that it “has decided not to accept cryptocurrency directly as a means of donation”. The organization also said it would close the account of its crypto payer bitpay to prevent any cryptocurrency contribution in the future.

WMF said it received cryptocurrency donations worth US $130100.94 in 2021, accounting for only 0.08% of the total donations it received. After the community vote, WMF held an internal discussion and made the final decision to stop accepting cryptocurrency donations.
