Out of the 21 million bitcoin that will ever be, an estimated 1.1 million, 5.2% of the total supply, is reported to live (and presumably die) inside the infamous “wallet of Satoshi”, the location where virtually all of the blockchain’s mining rewards of its first year active is stored.
As far as anyone can tell using on-chain metrics, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, was the only one mining Bitcoin from January 2009 to January 2010 and when he left, those funds were left to sit silent.
Many fear that one day the wallet will be active again, and the 1.1 million bitcoin will be sold and re-enter circulation (thus significantly devaluing the currency), but that has been a fear since the creator first left the scene… and the longer the wallet remains dormant, the smaller the chances such an event will ever happen.
