Sharding and Scalability: NEAR vs Polkadot

Sharding is a critical technology for blockchain scalability, and both NEAR and Polkadot employ it but in distinct ways. NEAR uses Nightshade, a sharding mechanism that allows the network to scale linearly by splitting the blockchain into multiple shards, each processing transactions independently. Nightshade ensures that NEAR can handle a high volume of transactions per second (TPS) without sacrificing decentralization. Polkadot, however, utilizes a different form of sharding through its parachains. Each parachain operates as a separate blockchain connected to the main Relay Chain, which coordinates security and interoperability. This architecture enables Polkadot to scale horizontally, supporting a diverse ecosystem of specialized blockchains. While NEAR focuses on enhancing the performance of a single chain through efficient sharding, Polkadot aims to create a network of interoperable chains, each optimized for different use cases.
