Gamers flock to game titles that either feature repeatable and enjoyable gameplay or ones that have a robust and emotionally moving story. A popular genre when it comes to creating these types of games is the world of Science Fiction where you can experience robots, gadgets, space crafts, and battle suits. Duskbreakers is planning to take the world of Science-Fiction into blockchain gaming combined with other mediums such as comics and animation. Let’s look at what Duskbreakers has in store for us in their Play-to-mint game.
Duskbreakers is an NFT Play-to-mint Sci-fi game developed by Metatheory. It plans to take its players aboard the Dusk, an abandoned aerial ship where people known as ‘Breakers’ explore among its remains to find valuable items and ores while battling and avoiding alien creatures. Utilizing NFT characters that all have their own unique background stories.
The breaker collection started with 10,000 uniquely generated NFTs ranging from astronauts to cyborgs, even space cowboys! It had a unique minting process. Holders would have to play the game to mint their NFTs thus the aptly named Play-to-mint!
In your quest to discover the story of the Dusk and the mysteries surrounding the ship with its other-worldly technology, you are placed in a futuristic world in a clean 2D animation style that somewhat shares inspiration with games like Jetpack joyride. The animation is also smooth, and the user interface is fairly easy to navigate.
As you control your Breaker, you have three abilities you can use to scout and fend yourself off from the dangerous alien creatures that are lurking around the mysterious airship. The gameplay combines as both a platformer and shooter game to create enjoyable gameplay that is easy to learn but has a lot of nuances you can discover as you play the game more. Like learning when to use the scout, invisibility, and stun abilities as you locate ore to mine while avoiding direct confrontation with the enemies.
You also need to be wary of the threat level you create that is displayed at the top center of the screen as moving and shooting increases the likelihood of a monster spotting you and running after you.
Duskbreakers is still a project under development and has yet to release its native token and the tokenomics that the team would implement. The only earning mechanic for Duskbreakers is the play-to-mint where you can trade the Breaker NFTs. As of the time of writing (Nov. 25, 2022), the floor price of one breaker is 0.0885 ETH in OpenSea.
Final Thoughts
To be honest, I don’t think Duskbreakers is something special on its own, however, it is trying to create a use for NFTs that are oftentimes just still images and I think the effort is commendable. They also stated on their website that they are planning to build the stories for Duskbreakers with the community through different mediums like videos and comics as well as games and I believe this is a unique take on giving utility to NFTs that otherwise would just be space on your hard drive.
Overall, I think using a game as a way to mint the NFTs is fun and creates another sense of security that people who would like to mint the NFTs would actually have to play the game. This increases the likelihood of people getting to know more about the pieces they are buying. Although I don’t see myself getting on it as the whitepaper is not released yet on their website which can typically be seen as a red flag. If you are looking for an original science-fiction title in the web3 space and believe that the project and its story will be successful, then give Duskbreakers a try as this could possibly be a web3 sci-fi staple if they play their cards right.
