Tiny Bytes: RSA
tldr RSA works by exploiting the fact we can’t easily factor 2 large prime numbers and group theory to make a trapdoor permutation, aka a function that turns x into y but y can’t easily be turned into x without a secret. However, implementing RSA gets tricky because there’s lots of subtle attacks.MathRSA takes advantage of the group Z^*_{n} (multiplicative group of integers modulo n). This is the non-negative integers less than n that have an inverse modulo n. 1 x 1 mod n = 1. 0 x int = 0 so ...

Hi, Just chilling tonight. Aiming to finish up chapter tomorrow. Night, Lucas

Hi, Did much more writing on RSA. Will finish soon. Bye, Lucas

Woot!
It’s officially been 1 month of writing every day. Took a couple short sections and some haikus but I made it!
Let’s get to the reflecting
One of the main things I’ve noticed is how the writing starts to flow once I start into a topic. It really reminds me of swimming. I rarely wanted to get into the pool. I’d stand on the edge looking down. Longing to do anything else. Then I’d jump. I’d start to swim. Everything was good.
Writing is a lot like that. There are some days where a topic is on the mind and I want to write. Most days, once I pick a topic and start writing it just starts to flow. I’ve mentioned the idea of thoughts coming as I write before but I want to highlight it some more. It is really cool the thoughts that writing can help inspire.
This point also highlights the hardest part of the process: getting started. The days that were hardest to write were late and I didn’t know what I wanted to write about. I really just had to start and say today would be a quick day. Sometimes it wasn’t even quick. But I had to pick and idea and start.
It’s interesting to see what topics and themes have been written about repeatedly. This week I even wrote down categories I wanted to write about for 5 out of the 7 days (quantum computer research, reflection, review, world building, privacy). I’m not sure how these patterns will evolve in the future but it’s interesting to see what my mind wants to put out.
I found it easier to talk about and explain topics I’ve written down to others. I find it exhilarating that I can explain privacy at a higher level more clearly. I can hit on the important points on how quantum computers break factoring large numbers.
To my it was obvious that researching a topic made you know more about it. Similarly, in my head it was clear that writing topics down would make those topics more clear; however, it feels different once I written a topic down. I’ve been forced to organize the topic more and related ideas have already floated to the surface.
Another interesting thing has been once I’ve published something it sticks with me a little longer. I’ve put thoughts out to the world and they are there. In a way there are no take backs. This really hit me with the Thor review. I liked it more than the general internet. I definitely mentioned a bunch of negatives but, when I looked up other reviews, it really made me question my opinion. This feeling of putting out your thoughts, especially a subjective, unpopular opinion, is curious. While the other posts made me want to tell friends about my thoughts, that post made me reflect a lot on my opinion and try to find as many opinions on that topic as possible.
I like this format for generating ideas. I enjoy how it helps me tease out ideas and explore topics.
I don’t think this format lends itself to practicing putting out edited content. It’s ok sometimes to quickly throw throw this in an editor. But I never enjoy that step. (at least for this type of format). The value I’ve gotten is about the exploration and solidification of ideas rather than putting those ideas in a good format to consume.
I do want to practice making edited content for others to read. My initial idea here is to finish up research into quantum computers, take all those posts, and edit one post to share with others.
The other things that is a little annoying is the writing everyday. I want to keep this up for at least another month. I am enjoying the flow and ideas. We’ll see if this gets annoying to the point of giving me an off day or any other changes. My predication is that it will be better if I:
Do some of the writing earlier in the day so the task is done
Give myself the option of some shorter days. Particularly, as some categories get into a more fleshed out format they will get quicker. For the world building post yesterday, I wrote most of that pretty quickly. I’m hoping that kind of flow will let me write something that fills me with pride and gives me quicker options on some days
Here’s to another month,
Lucas
