The gaming industry is exploring the possibility of interoperable items across different games, with some seeing NFTs as a vehicle to enable unique item ownership and functionality across games. However, significant challenges remain, including technological and business roadblocks.
For interoperability to become a reality, industry-wide tech standards and cooperation are crucial, and organizations like the Metaverse Standards Forum are fostering dialogues to achieve standardization and interoperability in gaming assets. Despite the efforts, achieving full interoperability remains a complex task due to the lack of standardization in-game asset design, and it may take considerable time for mainstream gaming to embrace this concept fully.
