Many people take them for granted and it's hard to imagine today's Internet without them: domains. These human-readable addresses replace the need to enter an IP address to access a specific website.
The Domain Name System (DNS), which has been in existence since the 1980s, is responsible for this.
But blockchains also have building blocks with their own addresses. These building blocks are primarily wallets and smart contracts, decentralized computer programs that live inside in a blockchain.
The associated addresses here are usually alphanumeric strings: long and difficult-to-remember combinations of numbers and letters.

To simplify their use, they can also be mapped using domains.

If, for example, the users Alice and Bob would like to receive a payment via a blockchain, they could each register a blockchain domain. A transaction would then be possible to their new addresses "alice.eth" and "bob.eth".
What problem do blockchain domains solve?
When trying to transfer a wallet address manually, it is easy to make number spins and incorrect entries. In practice, blockchain addresses are therefore copied to the clipboard and pasted elsewhere. However, there is also a risk of confusion here. There are also forms of malware that modify cached addresses unnoticed.
In centralized systems, such incorrect entries are often possible by updating underlying databases. For example, a short message to an incorrect recipient can still be deleted or edited retroactively. Even bank transfers to an incorrect addressee can still be retracted in some cases, provided the posting has not yet taken place. In the decentralized system of a blockchain, however, such subsequent changes are not possible. Finally, the immutability of confirmed transactions is one of the essential characteristics of a blockchain.
