Introduction

The world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has been rapidly evolving, pushing the boundaries of what is possible within the blockchain space. ERC-721, the standard for NFTs, has revolutionized the way we think about digital ownership. However, with the introduction of ERC-6059(7401), a new concept emerges — the parent-governed nestable NFT.

What is ERC-6059(7401)?

ERC-7401 is a proposed Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) that introduces the concept of one NFT owning another NFT, without the need for an externally owned account (EOA) or a smart contract. This standard extends the basic NFT standard to allow for nesting and a parent-child relationship between NFTs. In simpler terms, an NFT can own and manage other NFTs, creating a hierarchy of tokens.

Parent and Child Tokens

In the context of ERC-6059(7401), we define two key terms: parent tokens and child tokens. A parent token is an NFT that owns another NFT, while a child token is an NFT that is owned by another NFT. It is important to note that an NFT can be both a parent and a child at the same time, resulting in multiple levels of ownership.

The parent token holds the authority to manage not only the direct child tokens but also their children, extending the control to multiple levels of hierarchy. This hierarchical structure allows for a wide range of possibilities and opens up new avenues for creativity and innovation within the NFT ecosystem.

Potential Use Cases

  1. Bundling: One of the most exciting use cases of parent-governed nestable NFTs is bundling. With this feature, it becomes possible to group and sell multiple NFTs together as a single package. This makes it convenient for collectors to buy a set of related NFTs in one transaction, enhancing the overall user experience.

  2. Collecting: Organizing NFTs in a collection based on the owner’s preference is another powerful use case. By grouping NFTs from the same artist or theme under a parent token, collectors can easily manage and showcase their collections. This feature adds a new level of customization and organization to the NFT space.

  3. Membership: Parent-governed nestable NFTs can also be used to create exclusive memberships to decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) or clubs. By owning a specific NFT (parent token), individuals can gain access to additional NFTs (child tokens) that provide special perks or bonuses. This feature can enhance community engagement and incentivize participation within these organizations.

  4. Delegation: Another potential use case is the implementation of voting systems or delegation of decision-making power within decentralized organizations. By using nested NFTs as voting tokens or representations of authority, individuals can participate in governance processes and shape the direction of these organizations. This feature promotes decentralization and empowers token holders to have a say in the decision-making process.

ERC-7401(6059) introduces a groundbreaking concept in the world of NFTs — parent-governed nestable NFTs. This standard allows for the creation of a hierarchy of tokens, where an NFT can own and manage other NFTs. The potential use cases are vast, ranging from bundling and collecting to membership and delegation. As the NFT ecosystem continues to evolve, ERC-6059(7401) provides a powerful tool for developers and creators to explore new possibilities and create innovative experiences for users. With the introduction of parent-governed nestable NFTs, the future of digital ownership looks even more exciting and promising.
