“We do not have to visit a madhouse to find disordered minds; our planet is the mental institution of the universe.” ―Johann Wolfgang von GoetheWhat constitutes a disordered mind? What is disorder? What is its antithesis? Why does it matter? It was once popularly stated that a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, to which Albert Einstein quipped, “if a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” Albert Einstein had an idea about what an empt...

15 TRESPASS
Impingement. Infringement. Encroachment. Trespass. Symmetry and cleanliness thrown off by the trespass of something or someone that doesn’t belong. This is insanity broaching the carefully crafted constructs of the status quo. Recall from 02 SEE THROUGH that:Sanity is the state of being in alignment with the status quo. Any deviation, no matter how far, is madness. How far you stray defines how mad you are.Any encroachment by those deemed mad is infringement upon the faces of pristine structu...

11 THEY THINK THEY KNOW
Let’s start from the beginning, shall we? Recall from 02 SEE THROUGH that:Lovers and artists are mad. If you disagree with the statement, you are neither.Sanity is the state of being in alignment with the status quo. Any deviation, no matter how far, is madness. How far you stray defines how mad you are.I recently came across a meme that depicted some rather colorful characters with a caption that brooked no argument that this was unsavory. Exhibit A:The contempt here is palpable. We simply c...

“I want to continue being crazy, living my life the way I dream it, and not the way other people want it to be.” —Paulo Coelho, Veronika Decides to Die
Imagine that “being crazy” is how living life on your own terms is defined. Let’s return to 02 SEE THROUGH and recall that
“Sanity is the state of being in alignment with the status quo. Any deviation, no matter how far, is madness. How far you stray defines how mad you are.”
Anything and anyone who ever stepped outside the bounds of the status quo have always been labeled as wild and reckless and vilified to the largest extent possible …
… until what was vilified becomes the norm. The light bulb, airplanes, automobiles, and even cell phones rank high on the list of ridicule at their outset; their inventors naught more than charlatans. And yet, several decades later, these inventions serve as the bedrock to industrial and commercial success.
The light bulb, airplanes, automobiles, and cell phones didn’t come about in due course of the operations of the status quo. Nay, these things came about because the people who dreamed these up decided to step outside the lines and pursue those dreams. They deviated from the status quo. They chose to live life the way they dreamed it.
They embraced their madness.
Imagine that “being crazy” continues to be the defining phrase for anyone deviating from cultural norms. You don’t have to imagine it; you see it all around you. There’s a high likelihood that you contribute to it.
And yet “being crazy” is how magic happens. Embracing your wild, your weird, your madness is embracing your magic. Allowing yourself to step beyond the lines that have sought to define you is all that is necessary to release that magic into the world. And what can become of it?
There’s only one way to find out. But you’d be mad to try.
