i’ve been excited about the potential of nfts since hearing a terrific lecture at seattle art fair several years ago. then, in recent years i realized i could be someone who releases an nft. even with this knowledge, the idea of execution took some warming up to for me.
luckily, thanks to the mashibeats discord community, and hyper-specifically the mentorship program mashibeats’ founder mark de clive-lowe started, i’m actually planning releases outside of my head and assembling a plan. in our weekly zoom meetings i’ve been hashing out a plan with the help of mark and the cohort, but as i went to execute the building blocks for what I’m wanting to do with our band release, i realized how little i knew about the mechanics that would move us forward
readers, i still know very little! so as a means to get more comfortable & learn by doing, i’m going to start releasing some of my solo work in the near future (photo, video, maybe some music), which you can learn about by finding me on opensea here & on twitter here.
but enough about me! let’s talk about breakfast tacos, which is the name of my band, and the whole reason i’m in the mashibeats creator club.
who is breakfast tacos?
breakfast tacos is an electronic rock duo with latin roots split between washington & california. members include multi-instrumentalist, animator, and dad bradley oliver wilkinson vega + drummer, artist, & podcaster lynae cook (me). the two of us met in seattle as transplants & quickly began collaborating & eventually started breakfast tacos. bradley & i bonded over a lot of shared experiences with grief, our mixed roots (him being mexican-american, and me being colombian-american), love for latin music, pop music, ska, and so much more. for years we co-hosted a drink & draw event in seattle where we got to build community & this is how we got to know each other better as collaborators.
during the recording of our first album, i was beginning to work out of a multi-year depression, and bradley found out that his then girlfriend, now wife, was expecting a baby! bradley re-wrote almost all our lyrics to reflect his excitement about fatherhood, and we went back & re-recorded the whole album. at this point, i was in a much better place mentally, & our sound & vibe got much peppier. it also felt more age-appropriate (there’s something that feels off about talking about partying when in reality you both go out 2-3x/month & enjoy backyard vhs parties)
in a beautiful turn of events, his daughter tallu was born on my 30th birthday (may 17) and so the date became pretty significant to us. hence the release date of may 17, 2022.
what is this breakfast tacos project?
my band mate bradley has put together a beautiful zine that we’re releasing on may 17, 2022. there will be limited copies available. (see sneak preview on instagram here & twitter here)
purchasing the zine will include:
a flexi-disc
access to mint a pfp of our characters, these are the genesis pfps and will grow and evolve, and unlock access to the breakfast tacos world
this combination felt like a perfect way to meld our appreciation for the analog and the worlds that open up with web3
unfamiliar with us?
we’ve been an animated band from the start. during a time where i knew about nfts but thought of them very differently than i do now. so as pfp projects rolled out & music nfts rolled out, i couldn’t help but think, “we were born ready?” (see what i mean by watching out latest music video below.)
the aforementioned zine release is just our start in web3. we have one album out and have recorded our second album, which is currently unreleased. as we plan this new album’s roll out, we’re looking for ways to roll out various elements via web3. within that, and as alluded to in the above explainer of what the zine includes, we also have aspirations to give access to a vault of content that isn’t public.
in the meantime, sign up for emails on our site here. follow us on Instagram (@breakfast.tacos) & Twitter (@brkfsttacosband). thanks to tell.ie, we also now have this beautiful area to navigate
