🤔 Is web3 a hammer with no nails?
🧠 Just listened to this podcast on creator economy and how Nebula App is a viable solution for the creator economy. Dave Wiskus, the founder of the platform, talks about how creators get to vote on the destiny of the company as well as participate in the cap table.
🔨 It’s a working and profitable model for creators (many of which have educational classes) who make a living on the platform while not chasing the algorithm.
👺Wiskus also has a very negative view to web3 and blockchain and believes it to be looking to fix a problem which doesn’t exist. To be fair, I don’t disagree. His platform works and creators get paid. But one thing I found interesting was that the only way on the platform was through him as gatekeeper. The community can recommend other creators but he is the one who grants access. This isn’t a bad thing in the sense he’s a very smart person and has taste to have been able to build Nebula to what it is today.
📈 But I am curious as to scalability. While DAOs are still nascent could they be a solution to community platform voting? Could this be a way creators fully take control of the system or platform, where they can also scale up as large as needed so instead of one person overseeing the platforms future they all can participate? And if the platform were to sell and the current mechanics were transferred over what’s to say the new gatekeeper wouldn’t have the same taste or vision?
🤓Based off conversations I’ve had talking with brands and companies as well as individuals working or strategizing in e-commerce, many web2 solutions are working really well and this web3 hammer is smashing phantom nails. But there are real uses and scenarios, many of which I believe relate to scalability and trustless systems.
🤑Unfortunately the stink of greed and boorishness permeates the web3/nft/crypto and blockchain space. I don’t say “metaverse” since that’s a whole other can of worms. Right now so many naysayers believe it is this or that and web3 is coming to replace our current model (and this is also what some proponents espouse as well) but it’s more about evolution and adding in new functionality.
😻And to Dave’s point it should be focused on the creators and not the tech nor the greed.
Really great listen and worth an hour of your time. 😊
