Like many people, I bought an Oculus shortly after Facebook made their ‘Meta’ name change announcement. I took this announcement as the horn of a train heading west and the conductor yelling “All aboard!!”
Granted we have no idea where this train is headed and perhaps it’s not even a train, maybe it’s more of a rocketship or a merry-go-round. Anyway..
I’d researched VR headsets in the past, mostly when Facebook bought oculus in 2014, and I used several over the years like google cardboard, the OG Oculus Rift, and other random off-brands. I wasn’t impressed by the tech specs or the experience in these prior encounters, but with the Meta announcement it seemed like now, there was a chance I would be falling behind if I didn’t jump into the mix.
The investment behind oculus from Meta is significant and this give me a good bit of confidence that the quest 2 is the first best step because..
Meta is positioning it as their ‘stable’ flagship product for now so it HAS to work. I feel as though the Quest 2 is equivalent to the iPhone 4 in the product life cycle. The iPhone 13 is great and all but I still get a little nostalgic when I see the iPhone4 because it was massively better than anything I had used before it. It was my true gateway into the smartphone era. I can’t help but ask if I can hold it when I see one.. In the future, we will look at a Q2 and say -- “aww it’s so bulky, but you know what it still works!!!”
Longevity The quest will make a great backup headset one day
The specs for the cost are very competitive
I want to have the device I believe the masses will most likely use so I can understand the most widely used tool.
I need my first headset to work independently from a computer, I also don’t see the mainstream wanting to plug into a PC..
Even if a higher-end version comes out like the Quest Pro or the Cambria they will Likely still be out of my price range for still being such a beginner. My mom is happy with her iPhone8 and why make her upgrade if she isn’t going o use the new features?
Apple products are something o keep an eye on but maybe for a different category of use - AR.
Quest 2 is actively working on great features like using your hands to control (without handheld controllers) and Passthrough which keeps the AR door open to a certain degree.

Anyway, thats that. I wonder if I will ever look back at this post and laugh about how wrong or right I was for Quest 2 being the first best purchase into this feild.

No pc require, powerful as a entry level,
third wire-free standalone headset, following the Oculus Go and the Oculus Quest.
Snapdragon XR2 chip and 6 GB of memory
two and three hours of battery life
At $299 for the base 128 GB model (and we’ve not come even close to filling that), the Oculus Quest 2 is superb value for money. It’s comparable in price to the PlayStation VR (when you factor in the controllers), but offers superior tracking, and display quality, and doesn’t require any additional hardware.
The official Oculus Link cable used to connect the headset to a PC, is particularly pricey, however, considering what it does. It’s five meters long, which is a reasonable length but costs $79.99. The Oculus website suggests that this Anker cable is a suitable, much cheaper, substitute and we’ve had absolutely no problems with it.

Apples gear - apple isn’t thinking meta its thinking AR
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will follow up a headset launch, with a more glasses-like product, in 2025.
The headset will reportedly be a mixed augmented and virtual reality headset, designed for “bursts of gaming, communication, and content consumption.” The headset will include two displays, more than a dozen cameras for hand-tracking and will cost a whopping $3,000,

"We predict that Apple's MR/AR product roadmap includes three phases: helmet type by 2022, glasses type by 2025, and contact lens type by 2030–2040," wrote Kuo. "We foresee that the helmet product will provide AR and VR experiences, while glasses and contact lens types of products are more likely to focus on AR applications."
Apple's future in the space. Kuo said primary supply chain beneficiaries of the headset include Sony (exclusive display supplier), Pegatron (exclusive EMS), and suppliers related to optical components.

"Any Mac with an Apple Silicon GPU will work great, and we also support many of our most recent Intel-based Macs as well. Second, you'll need a supported Adaptive-Sync display, and to enable Adaptive-Sync mode. This can be done by selecting the new variable refresh rate available in Display System Preferences,"
