Bank of France Tests Show Wholesale CBDC Will Improve Cross-Border Payments

The Banque de France published today a report on its experience with the testing of a wholesale CBDC (wCBDC) using distributed ledger technology (DLT), a program launched in March 2020 comprising 12 experiments. The report demonstrates the operational feasibility and practical implementation of its three models of issuing a wCBDC directly on DLT, including an interoperability model, a distribution model, and an integration model. These three models have been tested using different types of DLT in a wide range of use cases, covering two key strategic areas: financial tokenization and improvement of cross-border transactions. The Bank of France stated that the next step will be to support the exploration of the Eurosystem and explore the boundaries of cross-border payments.
