I always feel like I have to create an initial piece to set the tone of what my writing will be about. Interestingly, I see this more for myself to not expand my thoughts into a thousand different directions but constrain it to a few topics. I am writing this more for myself than to create an audience. Producing content is the best way to reinforce consumed content and thoughts cannot be fully fleshed out without this process.
My career spans compliance, analytics, advertising, finance and sports betting. I also consider myself a book pharmacist with a desire to be better at prescribing books to friends as they need it (a la The Little Paris Bookshop). My friends are constantly amazed at my ability to speed read through manga. And I am a glutton for punishment when it comes to Souls-like video games.
Despite all that, I am choosing to write about crypto, coaching and creation. I have been drawn to crypto since 2016 and fell down the rabbit hole hard. I have stayed as an investor since then but more recently, I got together with some smart folks to hack together crypto projects on the side. Where will this lead? We don’t know but I am fascinated with the creation process. This will be a place to document both my thoughts investing in crypto as well as building products in the space.
And we cannot forget coaching. This has been a skillset I discovered and honed since 2017 with the likes of founders and corporate SVPs. This has become an extension of my fascination with behavioral psychology and neurobiology. All founders and leaders will need coaching at some point. By the nature of their work, they constantly deal with stakeholders, fires and pressure from all sides. This is a timeless skill that will apply throughout the rest of my life.
Again, why these three topics specifically?
Since I was a child, I pondered what my talents were as I grew up envious of those with amazing skills. To me, I considered talented as being able to contend with the world’s best. Going to Stuyvesant (a specialized high school in NYC), where I had future Olympians, chess grandmasters and US champions as classmates, did help to skew that view. As such, I never considered myself particularly talented in anything.
Even with that worldview, I found solace in my ability to think, especially in the realm of crypto, to build in a cross-functional team and to provide a coaching space for others. Am I the world’s best in these? No. But I have refined these above all my other skills and will continue to do so. My writing in the future will reflect my experiences here. If you happen to come across this and enjoy my work, I’d love to know and chat.
Cheers!
