Elliptic: attackers laundered $7 billion through cross-chain solutions

A recent report from Elliptic has highlighted a concerning trend in the world of cryptocurrency, where attackers are increasingly using cross-chain solutions to launder illegal crypto assets. According to the report, the volume of illicit funds laundered through cross-chain transactions has reached a staggering $7 billion within a year, marking a significant increase from previous estimates.

The report categorizes this criminal activity into three main areas:

  1. Decentralized Exchanges: These platforms enable the exchange of cryptocurrencies, often within the same blockchain. While decentralized exchanges offer a degree of anonymity, they can also be used for illicit purposes.

  2. Cross-Chain Bridges: Cross-chain bridges serve as conduits for cryptocurrencies to move between different blockchain networks. This technology has legitimate use cases but has also been exploited by criminals.

  3. Non-Compliant Crypto Exchange Services: Some cryptocurrency exchange services do not adhere to Know Your Customer (KYC) regulations, allowing users to trade without proper identity verification.

In Elliptic's initial "State of Online Crime" report published in October 2022, the estimated volume of laundered assets through these methods was $4.1 billion. However, the latest report reveals that this figure has grown to $7 billion, indicating that online criminal activity is increasing at a faster rate than anticipated.

Several factors contribute to the popularity of money laundering through cross-chain solutions:

  1. Shift to Alternative Coins: Criminals have moved away from Bitcoin to other cryptocurrencies, such as Monero (known for its privacy features) or stablecoins like USDT and DAI.

  2. Hacking DeFi Protocols: Criminals generate proceeds by exploiting decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, often resulting in tokens other than Bitcoin.

  3. Lack of Verification: Cross-chain services typically do not require stringent user verification compared to centralized exchanges.

  4. Analytical Challenges: The lack of robust analytical tools for tracking cross-chain transactions makes it difficult to monitor and trace illicit activities.

  5. Enforcement Actions: Regulatory crackdowns on mixing services and exchanges that flout KYC rules have driven criminals to seek alternative laundering methods.

This report underscores the ongoing challenges associated with illicit cryptocurrency activities and emphasizes the need for continued efforts in developing effective regulatory frameworks and enforcement mechanisms to combat financial crimes in the crypto space.
