Today on the bus, I encountered a hot-tempered driver. How hot-tempered was he? Well, let me put it this way: during a 30-minute journey, he spent 25 minutes constantly honking the horn to urge the vehicles in front to move faster. The remaining 5 minutes he didn't honk because he was urging passengers to get on and off quickly when the bus arrived at its destination.
This reminded me of a story called "The Empty Boat" from the book Zhuangzi.
The story of "The Empty Boat" is about a person who was crossing a river on a boat when another boat came toward them. The person shouted several times but got no response, so he cursed at the person sailing the other boat for being careless. But it turned out that the approaching boat was actually empty, and the person's anger disappeared instantly.
The moral of the story is: "People often become angry not because they have been hurt, but because they think they should not be hurt." However, what I want to say is that "People become frustrated, anxious, and angry because their calm inner peace is disturbed by worldly things. When the world is troubled, so are they."
So what exactly is the world, and how can we minimize its interference?
My answer is "inner seeking," and it is best done in quietness. This is why many hermits need to meditate in the mountains, while those who attain enlightenment can practice in the world, because their hearts are already pure, no matter where they are.
