If unfamiliar with network states see The Network State in One Sentence.
What do we need to ensure The Network State grows and lasts?
A media outlet and 2) an educational institution.
A media outlet is essential for growing the population of The Network State (TNS). The outlet spreads ideas to a larger population and eventually convinces them to join TNS.
An educational institution is essential for ensuring TNS lasts. An educated population is able to develop technology at a faster rate than competing diplomatic entities. This ensures TNS maintains an influential status that retains and attracts members. It also allows TNS to acquire more capital since they can sell technology to markets sooner than competitors.
Balaji has plans for the media outlet of TNS, The Residency has plans for the educational institution of TNS.
This post focuses on 2 key elements of building The Residency.
The Residency focuses on IRL higher education that 1) teaches more efficiently and 2) makes money in a manner that holds its administration accountable.
The Residency teaches not through lectures, but through peer learning sessions. This new form of learning is only now effective thanks to the advancements in AI that give every student the ability to set their curriculum, get answers to specific questions, and to test oneself.
The Residency makes money not through tuition, but through our student’s future earnings. Future earnings are defined by both the equity and income our students earn from the start of the program and slightly after the program. Y-Combinator and Bloom Institute of Technology (fka Lambda Schools), have both recently proved this is a business model that works.
The Residency can be franchised in order to scale quickly.
We already have founders at UC Berkeley, Harvard, University of Michigan, UT Austin, Tallinn University, and other geographies around the world who want to replicate our model.
TNS’s influence can be measure by the amount of people, capital, and spaced under TNS.
With The Residency joining TNS, we will increase the number of people, the amount of capital, and the space occupied by TNS.
Now is the perfect time to build a new alternative to higher education because public opinion on higher education is at an all time low, more companies are dropping degree requirements, and AI is fundamentally changing the best way to educate at scale. Combined with an approaching enrollment cliff, many small universities will be forced to shut down. Their beautiful campuses will be up for sale and the new innovators in the space will be well positioned to acquire their real estate.
