É uma relíquia da Exposição do Mundo Português de 1940 e foi construída no âmbito de uma exposição sobre a história da navegação. Na verdade, nunca funcionou como farol.
Grande parte da Exposição pretendia ser apenas temporária. Isto incluiu o Padrão dos Descobrimentos que (surpreendentemente) foi demolido após a Exposição. O Padrão dos Descobrimentos original foi construído apenas com uma leve moldura de ferro e cimento e o resto era de gesso, gesso e madeira. Foi reconstruído com pedra e concreto em 1960 para marcar o 500º aniversário da morte de Henrique, o Navegador.
