Faro do Esteiro is located in the woods of the National Stadium, about 430 meters south of the Stadium. It is a tiled square tower over the lighthouse keeper's house, with the south side of the tower painted with two red bands. The tower is 15 meters high and is located at an altitude of 82 meters.

This Esteiro lighthouse defines, together with the Gibalta lighthouses, in Caxias, and the Marca da Mama lighthouse in Carnaxide, the entry line of the Barra Sul of the Port of Lisbon to guide ships entering Foz and Tagus Estuary.
The lighthouse's light has a range of 21 miles (34 kilometers) and started operating in March 1914. Between March 1916 and December 1918 it was deactivated due to the First World War.
In 1981 the lighthouse was automated and started to be monitored from the Paço de Arcos Central, then no longer having lighthouse keepers.
