To my father, Vladimir Mitin, for his interest in technology and science that formed my way of thinking.     Some thoughts on call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4.I don’t see it as a call for stopping the progress. It is a call for accelerating progress in a more comprehensive way.      Probably the thing after GPT-4 will not be the area where Dragons be, probably it will, probably there is no Dragons at all. What is known for sure, that so far each new model demonstrates advance to higher level of intellegence. Looks like we are at some bifurcation point.     One way is the way where computational and intellectual resources are focused on understanding of what is knowledge learned by models from data. It leads us to real understanding of what these models are, causing comprehended progress.     Other way is the way where computational and intellectual resources are focused on blindly creating another more powerful model.     The second way is in our genome, it’s natural for our species. We acted like that all the time. Some societies were dying, due to bad results, some were advancing, due to good once. Surviing societies grew stronger, that caused overall positive effect for humanity.     It’s hard to predict which short term focus will be more efficient on the long run. Probably it will be progress on understanding current models. Probably progress on creating another more complex model as is, without understanding of what it really is. However, for us as species it’s beter if both ways will be used.     What are you thoughts?
