Arbitrum Stylus 101 Class Devrel Uni

We had the privilege of hosting Matt Hamilton, Senior Developer Relations Lead at Arbitrum Foundation, for an enlightening session on Arbitrum Stylus at @DevRel Uni on October 21st, 2024. As a Solidity developer with a year of experience, I initially approached Stylus with some apprehension due to its use of Rust. However, Matt's expert presentation demystified the technology, demonstrating how Stylus expands the possibilities for smart contract development:

Language Flexibility:

  • Allows developers to write smart contracts in languages like Rust and C++

  • Expands beyond Solidity, attracting developers from different backgrounds

  • Enables use of mature tooling from these ecosystems

Performance Improvements:

  • Delivers better execution efficiency compared to EVM-based contracts with improved speed

  • Offers lower gas costs for computation-heavy operations

  • Enables more complex on-chain operations

Compatibility:

  • Maintains compatibility with existing Arbitrum infrastructure

  • Supports interaction with regular EVM smart contracts

  • Uses familiar Web3 development patterns

His clear and comprehensive explanation showcased why he's considered a thought leader in the blockchain developer relations space. A key highlight was learning about WebAssembly (WASM), which enables the execution of smart contracts written in various programming languages. With these promising capabilities, developers should explore Arbitrum Stylus through its documentation, resources, and tutorials to fully leverage its potential.
