The General Lighting and Beaconing Plan considered the construction of a 4th order lighthouse in Ponta Delgada. The Commission of 1902 did not share this opinion, instead proposing that a first class device be installed at Ponta do Albarnaz. However, this Commission's decision was not peaceful. The possibility of installing a hyper-radiant device was even suggested, but as the expense was great and the difference in ranges was around 3 to 5 miles, it was in no way worth opting for this type of device. It ended up being decided to install a first class device as initially proposed.
In 1922, for the implementation of the lighthouse, an amicable contract was signed for the expropriation of 5525 m2 of land, with João Lourenço, for the amount of 3,500$00.

The Albarnaz lighthouse came into operation on January 28, 1925. It was equipped with a lenticular apparatus, not of the 1st order as expected, but of the 3rd order, a large model (500 mm focal length), the light source being a constant-level oil lamp. The rotation of the optics was produced by the watchmaking machine.
The constant level lamp was replaced by petroleum vapor incandescence in 1938.
On January 20, 1944, a military plane crashed into the sea very close to the lighthouse.
It was electrified through generating sets in 1956, using a 3000 W lamp as a light source.
In 1959 a telephone was installed.

In order to expand the lighthouse facilities, 200 m2 of land were purchased in 1968 from Father João de Deus for the sum of 1000$00.
The power of the light source was reduced in 1983 with the installation of a 1000W/120V lamp.
It is automated with the DF model system.
On June 25, 2008, the connection of the download to the EDA PT was completed and on September 30, it was finally electrified with energy from the public network.
Reduced the number of personnel from 4 to 3, transferring a man to the P. da Ilha lighthouse.
