when you want to use crypto as an affective tool in your life and let’s say for example buy something online, or as a payment method, or a way to pay/receive salaries you have to use more than one blockchain because there are a lot of people in the world who has different tastes and opinions about what is a good blockchain, some likes private blockchains and other examples, so let’s assume that you are an employer in europe and want to pay your employee’s salary who is in australia, you prefer to send crypto on ethereum blockchain but he/she prefers to receive it as bitcoin. there are some options like using a CEX, transferring your token to a centralized exchange and swapping it into bitcoin and then withdraw it to receipent address but you have to pay extra fees and there will be extra time wastings and some people for some good reason does not like to use CEXs. would not be beneficial to have a public blockchain that can bridge your assets between other smart contract based blockchains and non smart contract ones ? refering to our recent example moving assets between ethereum and bitcoin with less fees and time wasting ? this is what zetachain can do.
how it works
Zetachain is a public blockchain that uses proof of stake validators which built on the Cosmos SDK and Tendermint PBFT consensus engine that results a fast block time (~5s) and instant finality (no confirmation needed, no re-organization allowed). according to their whitepaper each ZetaChain validator node is attached with an observer that scans other blockchains for relevant events like transactions and the observers report the relevant events to ZetaChain and reach consensus. also each validator is attached to a signer holding a key share in order to change state on other blockchains and all the validators hold a single public/private key pair which can initiate transactions on other blockchains to change state directly. such ability allows powerful cross-chain (or omnichain) dApps to be built on top of native ZetaChain cross-chain smart contracts. the difference between this capability between ethereum and zetachain is that in ethereum smart contract can be trusted to manage assets according to predetermined rules but in zetachain a smart contract can leverage and manage assets on any connected blockchain. zetachain designed to be a decentralized cross-blockchain smart contract platform and wants to be a computer on all important blockchains so other ligh minded teams and developers build their decentralized dapps on top of it.
Testnet
zetachain currently is on testnet phase and you can test their product through this link. also you can earn points with each swap you make in seven days and also introducing to others with your referral link. for now you can swap a few assets between Goerli, Bsc testnet, Polygon mumbai and Bitcoin testnet(for bitcoin you can use Xdefi wallet).
step by step testnet guide :
1. first you have to add testnet networks to your wallet, i suggest metamask. by default it has Goerli network and you can easily add Bsc and Polygon mumbai with chainlist by connecting your wallet and typing the name of the network that you want to add and simply press the add to metamask button.
2. Then you have to go to the main page of zetachain testnet and connect your wallet, from get zeta page you can get test zeta token by connecting and authorizing your twitter.
3. Now go back to swap page and here you can choose the two networks that you want to swap your asset between them, for example you can swap your Ethereum Goerli native gETH to tMatic on Polygon mumbai. enter an amount and press the review order button, check the details and if it’s ok then press swap button.
4. Now all you need to do is to wait for the transaction to be succeed then you’ll see a page like this.
swapping from bitcoin :
1. i suggest using Xdefi wallet. after creating your wallet go to setting and turn on testnet (including zetachain) button.
2. in asset section choose BTC and copy the addres from receive button. then you can get som test BTC from coinfaucet.
3. after you receive your test btc you can go to swap page and choose bitcoin testnet network and connect your Xdefi wallet. then choose the receiving network and asset.
4. press continue, then a pop-up window will ask the receiving address and you can put your metamask or any other address and press save button.
5. enter an amount and press review order button and then press swap and confirm it on pop-up message from Xdefi.
6. now you have to wait to transaction to be done.
