SEEDS is the beginning of an open music industry.
The more time I spend thinking about this project, the more clear it becomes that it’s one of the best uses of my time and energy. Creating open source music and scaling global collaboration in an open, frictionless way really feels like future of music creation and is guaranteed to lead to interesting and compelling works.
Recently it’s become clear to me that allocating a large chunk of the money that these generate towards building systems and hyperstructures is the best way to make use of being as early as we are. So SEEDs is evolving into SEEDS DAO.
The IP has always been decentralized, the governance is becoming decentralized, maybe even the creation can become decentralized at some point.
Here’s a short bullet point list followed by more detailed descriptions:
DAO structure similar to Nouns:
Reliable auction cadence (2x/week)
Large majority of primary and secondary sales (75%) goes to treasuries
1 nft 1 vote governance
The purpose of treasuries is credible & authentic proliferation and artist empowerment through open source creativity, especially through hyperstructure creation in the following ways:
Collaborative -
To fund creation DAOs like Heds, StemsDAO & other hyperstructures that use SEEDS and it’s derivatives to create compelling pieces of music through community creation/curation.
Generative -
To fund creation of hyperstructures and other generative projects, especially ones that fund public goods (one example would be a more direct Nouns fork that recombines SEEDS stems and auctions into a treasury pointed toward public goods).
Executive -
To create a CC0 record label that collects/funds CC0 music that has promise of valuable ownership at scale (distinct from streaming value) and maximize it’s reach and cultural relevance.
SEEDS started off as an open art project but I’m realizing it makes much more sense as a DAO. It will take some time and logistics to bend it completely into decentralization but this is the beginning of that process. And that arc is honestly more of a feature since it allows for some momentum of culture and intention, not just in the art but in funding and systems building.
It will start with me trying to include votes as much as possible while working toward these goals, with steady steps toward fully decentralized proposals and funding like Nouns has.
The general structure is very similar to the Nouns model in many ways (75% funding a treasury for the goal of proliferation) but is also more art focused (1/1 handmade art, direct collaboration centric, 25% to artist/founder). Importantly, it shares the open scalability for subDAOs through CC0’s frictionless nature and adds a meta layer of 1/1 art above it. So theoretically could create multiple Nounish subDAOs.
Funds will be split evenly between these multisigs:
Generative - Projects to fund public goods
Collaborative - Song/flip DAO(s)
Executive - CC0 Label/Fund
I think it’s important that funds are evenly split for some time to give each of these a chance to get off the ground but the longer term vision (maybe starting at #50 or so) is to have the top bidder on each SEED choose the split however they like. Maybe with some minimum % for each.
Here’s a bit more of what I have in mind for each of the treasuries:
GENERATIVE treasury:
Let me start by saying my first goal in the generative space is to create hyperstructures for public goods. The Nouns model again is some inspiration here but generative art has so much potential and I think its best use in the space is toward benefiting the space/world as a whole.
So setting up an infinite auction/day dynamic that funds a public good focused treasury is the center of the bullseye for me.
That said, there’s plenty of potential for more generative projects with the artwork from SEEDS. There are between 2 and 10 stems (at present) for each work which is about 150 elements that can be worked with, recombined/pitched/chopped/reversed etc. This number will only increase.
And with the SEEDS music being CC0, anyone can of course create their own generative project. But the purpose of funding anything through the treasury is to incentivize it to actually happen and in the best way we can collectively imagine.
COLLABORATIVE treasury:
This is the core of the SEEDS creation engine. Inspired by Heds DAO / Stems DAO models. Basically healthy creative competition and incentivizing the best creators in the space to build with the SEEDS music in the most innovative ways we can.
This kind of DAO model (and there could be multiple for different goals/genres/structures) creates new layers of the CC0 tree in important and distinct ways. By building with the same sample, creators are incentivized to stand out and innovate much more. We see this month after month with Heds.
Applying this iterative approach to songwriting and song focused tracks is the way to break into the mainstream from crypto native systems, but it also maximizes creativity and participation and awards value where it’s due.
EXECUTIVE treasury / CC0 Record Label:
The goal is to make sense of decentralized publishing/label models. I see this working through acquisition of CC0 assets that the DAO feels are particularly desirable to own (as opposed to valuable to stream) and using the treasury and DAO resources to increase their visibility and proliferation.
These works can be fed into the Generative and Collaborative ecosystems of SEEDS as well. Lots of potential for cross pollination in many directions.
