Leaves

Nothing, from now on, let's hold on to our leaves!

I was walking in my uncle's forest farm, and occasionally I heard the crackling of the twigs on the trees, and the occasional owl call.

"David, why did grandma die?" my eight-year-old cousin Tim suddenly asked me. I was taken aback because I didn't expect Tim to talk to me, he hasn't said a word to me since we've been walking for so long.

"That's God's will," I said as I picked up a branch and threw it out. I turned my face to look at him and said, "God made her die for some reason." "I don't understand, what the hell are you talking about?" Tim exclaimed. His tone surprised me and I saw tears in his eyes.

"Grandma died, you must be very sad?" He nodded.

"Okay, I'll talk to you." I paused, hoping to see a mother rabbit leading her bunny through the woods so I could use them as an example. However, there was nothing to see except the tall oak trees all around. "Tim, grandma is old." I was talking when a leaf fell, I picked it up and handed it to Tim, "This leaf used to be young, but now it's old."

"Do all people die like this?" he asked, looking at the leaves.

"Of course not, just like all leaves don't fall in the same way."

"How did the other leaves fall?"

"Some fall slowly, like grandma..."

"I know that," Tim interrupted. "Tell me, what do other people's leaves look like?"

"Didn't I just say that? Some leaves fall slowly, like an old man; some fall fast, like someone has cancer."

I picked up a pebble from the ground and threw it into the sky.

"Why do some leaves fall so fast?" I never thought Tim would ask so many questions.

"This, I can't tell, maybe it's because some leaves are naturally weak, or they're sick, like some of us die very early."

"Sometimes I see that when a branch breaks, hundreds of leaves fall at the same time. What's the matter?"

This kid is so long-winded. "You think about it, when there is a plane crash or an earthquake, don't you have hundreds or thousands of people dead? It's the same with leaves, which sometimes fall together."

"David, where are your leaves?" Tim seemed a little afraid to ask such a question.

"It must be somewhere, but I can't tell right now." Feeling a little cold, I zipped up my shirt. "David, I'm going to protect your life, I'm going to grab your leaves and keep them from falling so you don't die."

I was amazed. "Look, kid, people always die, sooner or later. Death is inevitable, just like you can't catch all the leaves, that's all."

"But spring has come, and the trees are covered with leaves again. What's the matter?"

"It's like a newborn replacing a dead person." I looked up at the sky, it was getting dark.

"So, David, where did the baby come from?"

"Damn it, it's so cold here, let's go home. I'll race with you to see who gets home first."

"Wait, David, you haven't answered my question yet."

"Pre-prepare-run!"

"what?"

"Nothing. From now on, let's hold on to our leaves!"
