The Coinweb Weekly Spin

The Weekly Spin. Sixteenth Edition. This week was a tough one for the markets, as Bitcoin held support at $26k but overall liquidity in the market remained low. In the spotlight was Binance, who are facing battles on all sides – with the EU regulators increasing their scrutiny causing the announcement halting SEPA transfers late September, card services for LatAm shuttering, and severing their partnership with Mastercard. Meanwhile, a report by hedge fund Brevan Howard claims that stablecoin settlements matched payment giant Visa for the year 2022 – valued at over $11 trillion. Coinweb’s own payment platform OnRamp has been responsible for nearing $500 million of that amount, with monthly revenues exceeding the $10 million mark consistently since July. Our alpha tester program is in full swing with great progress and several version upgrades since the beginning of the phase.

Another big topic this week was the explosive launch of Friend.tech, a cryptocurrency centered social networking application that rocketed Coinbase’s Layer 2 protocol Base to the top of the charts in terms of transaction amounts and value. Over $1.7 million in fees were generated during just the first week of launching, rivaling Ethereum itself. However, it is yet to be seen how sustainable the model is since fees have dropped by 70% since its extremely hyped launch.

Enforcement actions were the plat du jour around the world this week, with the DoJ handing SBF’s lawyers over 4 million pages of documents during discovery, China sentencing a man to life in prison for cryptocurrency mining, and the Tornado Cash devs Storm and Semenov facing charges of up to 20 years in prison. Pepe memecoin took a major nosedive this week as accusations of insider trading and other controversies appeared in the narrative, and scams have escalated substantially according to on-chain surveillance system AegisWeb3; advising all of us to remain vigilant and to exercise careful and safe practices. The latest phishing scam was reported to present users with the correct official link of a website in the Google sponsored ads result, only to lead them through a malicious IP and ask for a wallet connection… here is our round-up of curated news and opinions (surely biased) from the world of Blockchain, keeping you informed into the market news with the most trending, in-the-know, and controversial topics.
