We have got so much on our plate that it sometimes becomes overwhelming and hard to avoid procrastination. What I have noticed is we mostly procrastinate when the task at hand requires a high amount of energy and time. so what do we do? we break the task into what can be done in 5 mins. say writing the ideas for your next article.
Research shows the anxiety you face at the thought of a big presentation is exactly the same as when a spider tries to take a shower with you. 😨
Now, The idea behind the 5- min rule is to promise your brain to work on small but a specific part of a task for only 5 mins, put a timer, and start working, with the idea that you can quit after 5 mins if you like.
5min rule reduces the fear and anxiety associated with the task which is why you procrastinate in the first place.
Ok, let me ask you a question. what sounds more doable writing a few ideas and preparing the outline of how your article will look like or writing a whole essay of 1800 + words in one go? you got the idea.
The good part is after 5 mins, you will probably end up doing the whole thing. and once you cross the barrier and catch the momentum there’s no looking back.
