Im Lilith, Web2 and Web3 artist. My quest for information for my project inspired me to start this initiative to share clear and detailed information about Web3. This is the first cornerstone of everything, I hope you enjoy it and find it useful!
What is or what is meant by Web3?
Web 2.0 represents an evolution in the way users interact online, moving from a static model to a more dynamic and participatory one. This generation of websites encourages collaboration, information sharing and content creation by users. The participatory culture in Web 2.0 refers to the active contribution of users in the creation and distribution of content, and examples such as social networks and collaborative platforms illustrate this change in the way people engage with the Web.
Gartner's definition of Web3 highlights its focus on technologies for developing decentralized web applications, empowering users over their data and digital identity. Although it does not explicitly mention that it is the third generation, your explanation clarifies that Web1.0 was the initial web with static content, and Web2.0 introduced interaction and social networking. Web3 represents a move towards decentralization and the user's ability to control their information in a broader context of evolving web services.
Gartner identifies the fundamental pillars of Web3 in three key concepts:
1-Semantic Web: A term coined by Tim Berners-Lee that imagines a network where machines process content similarly to humans. Data would be interconnected and understand contexts and concepts at deep levels.
2-Artificial Intelligence: The ability of machines to learn and understand human activities, currently exemplified by generative AI.

The successful synergy of these pillars will theoretically enable the advent of Web3. But why is this evolution of the web so important?

The central goal of Web 3.0 is to empower users, making the web more efficient and effective in facilitating quick and easy access to information.
-Decentralization: Elimination of a central entity, allowing each user to be responsible for their data. This drives the development of decentralized applications (DApps), backed by a distributed network of computers, with decentralized finance (DeFi) at the core of DApps.
-Blockchain: A distributed database technology that facilitates secure and transparent transactions, although still niche, it has the potential to revolutionize online transactions.
-Enhanced Security and Privacy: Decentralization reduces attack points, allowing each user to control who accesses their information and what is done with it.
Although most experts agree on certain features of the Web3, a few more can be added. Following Tim Berners-Lee's definition of the Semantic Web, Web3 should be characterized by:
Bottom-up design: Code is developed in full view of everyone, encouraging participation and experimentation.
Ubiquity: The Web should be accessible from anywhere, through any platform and device, promoting equality and global contribution through open source software.
Differences between Web2.0 and Web3!
The main distinctions between Web2.0 and Web3 focus on data storage, connectivity, currency and decentralization. While Web2.0 emphasizes content creation and user interaction, Web3 focuses on the digital experience and gives control of personal data to users.
In short, the transition from Web2.0 to Web3 marks a positive move towards a more user-centric digital experience. Web3 not only offers greater control over personal data, but also promotes decentralization, empowering users and encouraging more active and equitable participation in the digital space. This shift not only improves online privacy and security, but also opens up new possibilities for innovation and collaboration, creating a more inclusive and democratic digital environment.
Web3 abandons fiat money transactions, adopting cryptocurrencies and a decentralized financial model (DeFi), transferring economic control from companies and governments to users.
Performance-wise, Web3 could be slower due to the decentralization of transactions across multiple independent servers.
