The music industry has come a long way since the days of vinyl records and radio play.
What's good, everyone? Steve Summers here, aka STØNEWÅX. As an artist/producer, and friendly neighbourhood nerd, I've been keeping a close eye on the state of the music industry, and let me tell you, things are changing fast.
One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the rise of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music. As a music fan, it's dope to be able to access all your favourite songs and discover new artists without having to buy individual albums or tracks. But as an artist, it's been a little more complicated.
See, with album sales and downloads declining significantly, musicians have had to look for new ways to monetise their music… and right when the music industry was about to fold in on itself (COVID-19)… out rose the updated Web3 technology and NFTs baby.
Web3 is the next generation of the internet, which is more decentralised, open, and democratic. It uses blockchain and decentralised finance (DeFi) to enable artists to directly monetise their work and engage with fans without any middlemen. And NFTs, in particular, have been gaining popularity as a way for artists to monetise their work and engage with fans.
As an artist myself, I'm excited about these possibilities. With the traditional music industry being so heavily reliant on gatekeepers and intermediaries, it's refreshing to see a more decentralised and democratic approach to music. I love it and I’m in it for the ride.
So, my unbiased advice to any other musicians out there would be to get educated on Web3, blockchain, and cryptocurrency. Learn about the different possibilities and opportunities that Web3 presents for the music industry. And don't be afraid to experiment with decentralised applications (dApps) and platforms like Manifold and Zora, or look into communities that have marketplaces. Emphasis on the word communities.
By building a strong community of fans and supporters and exploring new ways to incentivise and reward them, we can create a more sustainable and equitable music industry for everyone. Time to adapt homies!
