Dapp vs Smart Contract (6th Grade English)

Take Instagram for example

To like ❤️ a picture on Instagram, you do not alter the code.

You just tap the button, and it count it as a like.

It is because, there is a connection 🔗 between the front end (button) and the back end (code).

This connection is set in terms of “if” and “then” scenarios.

“If” your press the like button, “then” the like count increases by +1.

This code is set and it is stored in the Instagram server.

If this code is stored in many computers across globe,

then we’re talking about Smart Contracts.

Smart Contract

Smart contract is a chain of codes ⛓️, that is stored on the “Blockchain”, and cannot be changed once deployed (even by the creator).

It is not controlled by government or 3rd parties.

Like Instagram code,

The smart contract acts in “if” and “then” scenario.

For e.g.

You and I are strangers.

You want 1 Ether & I want $3000 in return.

But we don’t trust each other and also don’t want to rely on 3rd party or government for this transaction.

So we create a smart contract.

“If” you send me $3000, “then” I will send you 1 Ether.

This acts as the law of the code.

When I receive $3000, the contract automatically sends you 1 Ether.

No third party, no legality, no government, no trust.

The smart contract acts as a digital machine that does something when something happens.

In both of the above examples, there is only one “if” and “then” scenario.

“If” your press the like button, “then” the like count increases by +1.

or

“If” you send me $3000, “then” I will send you 1 Ether.

But in an app like Instagram, there exist many “if” and “then” scenarios.

So to decentralise them for WEB3, collection of smart contracts are used.

This collection of smart contracts are called Dapp - Decentralised Application.

Think of Dapp like a finished product.

Here, the Instagram is the Dapp & the API are the smart contracts.

Conclusion

In simple words, we can conclude:

  1. Collection of codes creates Smart contracts & collection of smart contracts creates a Dapp.

  2. The collection of codes are stored in Blockchain and therefore cannot be changed once deployed (even by the creator).

This creates a trust less model that operates autonomously.
