Prelude:
This is fun. Over the holiday break when I was back at my childhood home I found my high school yearbook from senior year. I graduated from high school in 2012. I took a picture of the the passage I wrote which includes quotes and a small write up. I’d like to use this section to analyze my choices. Here is the passage from the yearbook (please note the passage was written in the fall of 2011):

1. For this first quote, it’s not so much the quote that matters rather it’s the person it is attributed to. Quite honestly, I’m not sure if Lauren Conrad was the first person to say this quote let alone if she even said it at all. The quote doesn’t matter. Lauren Conrad does. I was a loser in high school. Because I was a loser I had zero drama in my life. I stayed out of everything. I attended no parties and had a total of zero romantic relationships. This is the way I preferred it. But of course, everyone needs drama in their life and I found it in the form of watching MTV’s The Hills. Watching Lauren, Audrina, and Heidi navigate their way through the LA scene had a profound impact on my life. While she skipped out on the final season, Lauren was and always will be the heart of that show. Looking back, I find it shocking to think that the entirety of this show took place before the advent of Instagram. In many ways the show planted the seeds for what was to come in the world of socialites and influencers. Nonetheless, I loved Lauren and needed her name next to mine in my high school yearbook. And so I included this quote.
2. Those of you that have read previous write ups may know that in 2011 when this passage was written, I was fixated on attending the University of Southern California. Hence the quote, ‘go west, young man.’ My father taught me about this quote which was said by Horace Greeley in reference to the opportunities that were present during the westward expansion of the United States during the mid 1800s. In the end, I did not end up going west.
3. I love Ernest Hemingway. It is my belief that every high school yearbook must feature at least one quote attributed to Ernest. I, of course, was the only one in my graduating class to feature a quote from Ernest and thus I think the entire class is indebted to me for this. A bunch of philistines if you ask me! Anyway, I like this quote because it is very much in line with my my beliefs. There are no universal rules that apply to each and every person. What is moral is what you feel good after. What is immoral is what you feel bad after. Perfect.

4. Odd I suppose for someone who now writes lengthy blog posts on the internet to go with such a succinct written portion. But, this is where I was in the fall of 2011. I hated high school and could not wait to graduate and never return. I should add that since I graduated in June of 2012, I have not returned and assume I never will. I’ll leave the reader to use their imagination when analyzing what I meant by that last sentence in the passage above.
Write Up:
I’d like to first discuss how I ended up with the image I collected. The story goes like this. I originally bid on a different piece from Jenna. It was called ‘Dreamer’ and it was a picture of the Northern Lights. As is customary for these write ups, if I was to win that auction, the write up was not going to touch on the Northern Lights in any way. I was going to write about one of my favorite pop stars, Charli XCX. The combination of the purple colors and the name ‘Dreamer’ which is the name of one of her songs from 2017 evoked her in my mind and I fully intended on writing about my love for her. In true blockchain auction fashion, I was outbid and so I did not win that image. The cool thing about potentially collecting from Jenna Dixon is that every image she mints is incredible so upon being outbid I swiftly moved in to start the auction on the image I ended up collecting. Let’s take a look at the image below:

My favorite thing about collecting landscape photos is that I really don’t consider myself an ‘outdoors person.’ A quick anecdote should give the reader a more clear image. In the fall of 2017 I took a trip with some friends from high school to visit our friend in San Francisco. Ever the outdoorsman, he took us to one of the many trails in Northern California to trip on acid in nature. I was scared (however false this belief may have been) that given the altitude of the trail we were on that if I took LSD, I would then go mad and jump off the cliff and die. And so I did not trip on acid that day. While my friend was tripping on acid he stopped and asked us a very simple question. He said, ‘what could be better than being in nature?’ I replied in a deadpan manner that well actually I’d much prefer to be front row at a fashion show right now. Upon hearing this everyone laughed. I suppose it was funny because my response took on the complete antithesis of the sentiment my friend had uttered just moments earlier. I suppose it was also funny because it was so fucking true.
Jenna included a write up along with this photo and I’d like to hone in on the section below:
‘Although the autumn season is brief, it is the most memorable, as the vibrance and richness of these landscapes take on an otherworldly glow with the rise of the morning sun.’
Circling back to the story of how I ended up collecting this image, I’d like to share a quick maxim I live by: Everything happens for a reason so long as I ascribe a reason to the thing that happened. And so, the reason I ended up collecting this image is because I love Autumn and the Fall is the prevailing motif of this image and thus I’m able to write about my love for it. Fall is my favorite season. The months of September - December are my favorite months of the year. In my younger years (given the melancholy that came with going back to school) this was my least favorite time of year. As an elder member of society, it is now my favorite. I’ve never attempted to put into writing why I love the Fall so much. Often times, it is quite elusive to put a feeling into words. But, I’ll give it a try. Fall weather in New York is cold, but not too cold. Stepping out into the streets of Manhattan on a cool fall night is energizing. I can literally feel myself being filled with optimism upon stepping outside. Cool weather, bright lights, people buzzing. It’s all quintessential New York. Summer in Manhattan is humid, sticky and dry and most people end up leaving the city on the weekends to explore other locations. The winter is cold. Often times so cold that people end up locking themselves indoors so as not to freeze. The Spring is simply meh. Yes, we’re all optimistic about the summer, but the weather is for the most part still too cold for people to enjoy. But then there’s the Fall. Optimism about upcoming events like Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the Holidays is prevalent. People gather into bars to cheer on their favorite college and NFL football teams. The Fall in New York is just different. And I love it. And I love that the photo Jenna took celebrates the beauty that comes with the Fall season.
Postlude:
After making two sales in the span of 24 hours, I saw the following post from Jenna:

I do want to stress that I understand that not everyone is in a position to do something like this and I’d never want to give the impression that I believe artists supporting other artists is a requirement. I am a big believer that everyone should be free to do with their money as they please free from criticism. That said, it was very nice to see Jenna use a portion of the funds she received to support another artist. Thanks for continuing to push the photography space forward Jenna 🤗🤗🤝🤝
