Eploring Dubai’s empty $13 billion man-made Island
Introducing The World, a place beyond imagination and an epic achievement. This multi-billion dollar experiment built off the coast of Dubai is an attempt to resemble an outline of the earth from the sky.
The goal for The World island was to expand Dubai’s limited waterfront and create an island enviroment just outside of the bustling city. The construction of the 300 man-made islands began in 2003 and was officially finished 5 years later in 2008, which was not the best timing for a massive real estate project. Because even though about 60% of the islands were sold to private contractors with a global financial crisis, most private owners decided to completely halt their construction fo the time being. On top of that solving the logistical challenge of how to bring materials out to build on the islands and then eventually finding sources of water and power to live on the islands also delayed some developers. Now getting permission to go out to the islands is a little hard to get.
Currently there is only one island open to the public, Lebanon island opened about 8 years ago as a day party venue. people live in Dubai will get away from the noise and go to Lebanon island for relaxing themselves on the weekend. There is another island named Coronation, which is a restricted private island currently under construction. No one has gotten access to this island yet. It looks brand new and quite livable. There arre different kind of villas built with different styles. There will be totally 630 villas built on this island. All construction materials were shipped from ouside, which is difficult and full of challenges. The owner said they tried to do something organic, so when tourists enjoy their holiday on the island, they can feel the island, feel the bamboo, so that they won’t feel as if they are in the city.
One of the most important thing is, by doing this they can protect the sand from going and keep the water clear and circulating. First they started with seven continents, then they found out that the continents were too big, so they made them small and made them islands. The amazing thing is they’ve made the beach in Dubai from 60km to 850km. Nobody ever built or reclaimed the island the way they did. They built the breakwater, which are rocks that are protecting the area so no matter how bad the sea, it doesn’t affect their island as much. They don’t have to get water out shipped, because they desalinate it themselves. Even the garbage they convert into gas. All the organic material, they don’t ship it out, the only thing they ship out is plastic, glass and tin. Everything else there, such as cartons or paper, it can become a compost for the agriculture. And all the foods left over goes into the system, what comes out is the methane gas, the methane gas goes to the special oven and they cook with it. So it reduced how much garbage they sent out to the island.
That’s really incredible and insane!
