I've trained to become a plastic, aesthetic, burn, reconstructive, hand and microsurgeon.
I work in a major academic institution and have established my own research group over the years, mainly focussing on perfusion system to study ways of extending ex-vivo perfusion time for complex vascularized structures such as limbs to improve replantation and allotransplantation outcomes. Over time our research focus has expanded to include technologies for improving functional outcomes by improving neuro-muscular and neuro-sensory aspects. A more detailed overview on the work we are pursuing can be found here:
But as it so happens, my compulsive curiosity sparks ideas for potential improvements and projects way beyond my own field of expertise and way beyond my personal abilities to see all of these through. But I would love to explore some of these ideas non the less.
I imagine having ideas and scientific hypotheses beyond my own field of research and expertise. Ideas that I would love to see challenged, improved, refined, discussed and eventually come to life. Ideas that require expertise that might be dispersed across different labs, companies, countries and continents.
Current scientific collaboration for undertakings like this is tedious. Complex legal and structural hindrances with regard to IP and fund raising, not to mention the actual experimental setup and scientific publication are just some obstacles that need to be overcome.
This is the reason for my attempt to establish something like a decentralized idea lab - the Crazy Lab.
The Crazy Lab is intended to serve as a framework for publicly sharing and exploring field-spanning ideas and hypotheses. I would like to draw from recent developments with regards to "web3" technologies like blockchain, multisig wallets and DAOs to allow for an amorph, ever changing development of a "decentralized lab", where intellectual expertise and wisdom can be paired with specific local real life lab equipment to proof theories and hypotheses. Public documentation of the entire process from start to finish adds transparency and may foster decentralized funding possibilities for people with options like tokenized share of any value created through these projects.
The baseline premise for all ideas to come is, that I am a) too naive, dumb or ignorant to properly understand the underlying problem b) too naive, dumb or ignorant to assess the feasibility of the proposed solutions and or unaware of already available solutions c) after the rigorous cross-examination of these ideas by people way smarter and informed than me, a core proposition remains that inspires more people to work on it together
Some ideas to accomplish aforementioned objectives are:
Public and transparent project description and continuous documentation on chain
Podcast-like discussions of projects to poke holes into early ideas and develop specific research hypotheses and working packages
Setup of DAO like project funding structure with multisig wallets of respective stakeholders of the actual project
Right now a lot of this sounds rather vague and unspecific, because that’s what it currently is - I hope it becomes clearer along the journey.
I am excited and curious to see if and how this already very first "crazy idea" in and by itself hopefully comes to life.
