The Based Intern #2: The Lender's Dilemma

Scene I

The leaves outside Base HQ begin to rustle and change color, onchain summer is nearing its end and a new season is around the corner. Fall has always been a time of change, and for Base Labs, this year is no different.

The worry at HQ is of regulatory overreach as the Director of the Bureau of Banking Benevolence is set to testify before the Committee of Financial Fairness later today.

Scene II

A silhouette stands looking out of a grand window at the Bureau of Banking Benevolence. It's Larry Lender, the Director. Behind the stony façade lies a heart with a story.

Flashback: A Dilemma - A young Larry Lender grapples with a political quandary - his challenge lies in a pivotal decision: remain silent, align with his party, and potentially secure their collective power, or courageously voice his concerns, risking not only his career but jeopardizing the party's grip.

Scene III

In a more personal setting, Larry's home, we see pictures of a young Larry Lender with his family. The man wasn’t always the embodiment of the establishment. In the beginning, it was about helping people manage their finances and dreams.

Scene IV

Back at Base HQ, the place is bustling with activity. The Base Builder community continues to grow. There are even a couple of nerds who collaborate on an onchain painting with a different theme each day.

Conversations range from which football player is dating which pop star, to nuanced debates on zk vs. optimistic roll-ups, to simple, human stories of how getting onchain every day has transformed lives.

Scene V

Ryan Strongarm is seen taking a stroll outside with Toshi, his small blue dog, enjoying the crisp fall air. They share a moment, playing with fallen leaves, reminding us of the simple joys amidst the complex world of crypto.

Scene VI

As the leaves crunch beneath their feet, Ryan recalls his own journey, from skepticism to belief. He points out a particular tree to Toshi.

“Just as this tree sheds its leaves to grow new ones next spring, we need to let go of our old beliefs to build the future."

Scene VII

The courthouse, a monumental structure representing the old financial guard, buzzes with anticipation. Rumors spread about Larry Lender’s trial and the arguments he's likely to face; are Pokémon cards bought and traded by 8-year-olds with the expectation of a return? Surely we’ll get to the bottom of this.

On the steps, a crowd gathers, a mix of Base supporters and traditionalists.

Scene VIII

At this point, one might appropriately wonder where Ryan Strongarm’s coffee was, the intern was on it, but, getting a coffee on this particular week meant being caught up in the crosshairs of Hall’s “slow drip” phase.

Coincidently the intern was not particularly needed for the plot of this issue.

Scene IX

As the crowd waits for the proceedings, a large armored money truck parks right in front of the courthouse. The side of the truck displays a bold message:

"The future of money doesn't move on a money truck."

Whispers erupt.

Scene X

Inside the courtroom, Larry now many years past his initial dilemma finds himself presented with the same question on a much grander scale. He bides time and dodges specific questions with vague answers.

“I’d have to look more into that.”

“The Bureau is working on that.”

“The path to register has been achieved internally.”

Despite Larry's words, his changing facial expression during the testimony suggests he believes that even with scams in this new industry, the technology still has the potential to improve the financial system that exists today.
