Any seasoned traveller will know that there are vast areas between and within the Realms where the reach or interest of the Orders is feeble. The Orders exclude these places from their maps but if you go there yourself you will not find an empty space, but often a thriving Republic of the Free. The Republics are heterodox, but if they have one common characteristic it is a distrust of the Orders and an aversion to magical items. Any Republic that exists for any length of time will, sooner or later, be visited by adherents of the Order of the Fox in disguise.
For the Order of the Fox holds an admiration for these Republics and the people within them that borders on worship, as they value freedom, independence and a rebellious spirit above all else. Spending time among the Free Republics is an essential rite of passage for any member of the Order of the Fox, and ideally this is a peaceful and unobtrusive period of learning. In the best cases, it can mean that any rival Order that antagonises a Free Republic may find itself having to deal with one or more Foxes hidden among its people. There is, however, also a long and unfortunate history of these initiates outstaying their welcome, causing a massive accident or offense or some other act leading to their banishment, which can lead to the despoiling of the very communities that the Order idolises.
