where's the poetry
is no question for me
it's in all I see
In nature, in music, in a cup of coffee, you can find inspiration in everything, as designer Paul Smith says. And in the conversation we had about inspiration in the poetry channel on Farcaster, there were indeed as many sources as there were people sharing about it. The conversation was started by a quote from Chuck Close that Jesse Kanelos-Weiner shared in her Creative Mornings talk in Paris recently: "inspiration is for amateurs, the rest of us just show up and get to work". Personally, I don't really love the tone of this quote, starting it with 'amateurs' has a sense of disdain in it. But it connects for me very much with the idea Elizabeth Gilbert talked about in her TED talk, and also my favourite Dutch writer Harry Mulisch used to point out: we as creators are just the ones capturing the story. It is passing us by. A genie, maybe. We just need to be there to see it and capture it. Very similar to what Michelangelo is said to have said: the statue is in the marble, we just need to cut away the pieces around it. Or something like that.
It is how I often feel when I write poems: they come to me, or I find them. They are there. My job is to be able to hold on to them, capture them. When that doesn't work, it might not have been my poem to capture. If it does, I have a new poem. And that can happen anywhere. I find them in all I see.
